On my run from Fulda to Kassel, an ICE 1 passed me and I noticed it was quite short, so I had a look on the route map and it only had 11 cars instead of 14. I then tried to find the service myself, and while it does not exist in normal timetable mode, you can find it when spawning in Kassel at 16:10. ICE 797 to Frankfurt(Main)Süd via Fulda, departing at 16:14. You can then also drive it. Count carefully: Only 11 cars (9 passenger coaches + 2 head locomotives) Is this intentional?
Yup, there are 11 car formations irl. Most of them are LDV (modernized) variants but there are some old gen 401 with short formations too. Most of them are used on routes where the platform length wouldn't support the long variants.
Just noticed today that when you select ICE1 for timetable mode, on the official liveries options there is now an option for “DB ICE1 11 Car” with different Timetable. 7 service options, one is an ECS
