Just found out that Gamescom Live is happening on 20th August, which is the same day as the big Dovetail Live Summer thingy. I know the TSW fans will be watching the DTG stream, but can't help thinking that a lot of potential new players and/or casual gamers are going to miss the TSW5 announcement hype train (excuse the pun) in favor of watching Gamescom.
The Dovetail Direct starts 4 hours before the gamescom one and probably wont take 4 hours (could take more than 4 though). Also the Gamescom is just the opening night stream as far as i know. Most likely should be possible to watch both of them.
I think the majority of Gamescom watchers are probably completely unaware of the fact that DTG are planning a stream on the same day. I also think it works the other way. I’d never have known about Gamescom unless I happened to be searching for something to do with Köln and it happened to show up. (And I’m still not in the slightest bit interested in it). Either way looks like they don’t overlap and, as mentioned already, DTG’s stream is pre recorded. So I can’t see a problem.
Unless there's going to be a massive expose of the new MSFS or there's a new Snowrunner game in the pipe, my focus will be on Dovetail Live not Gamescon.
I'd expect Focus to be presenting at Gamescom since they're a fairly large publisher, so by extension DTG may well be part of it, and indeed the DTG Direct may actually be part of Focus's Gamescom plans
I’ve never heard of Gamescom. I’m not in the overlapping section of the TSW players and gamers Venn diagram. I’m tucked up right at the opposite end of the TSW circle, as far away as it is possible to get from being a gamer.
My understanding is that Gamescom doesn't begin until 8/21 anyway. Regardless I'm not that much of a gamer either so will watch the DTG Direct broadcast after it streams so I can skip to the interesting parts ( if there are any ).
That’s correct, but there is the launch stream on the 20th at 20:00 CEST which I guess is what the OP is referring to. I still don’t see why this makes the 20th a bad choice for DTG.
I’m assuming this is intentional. Gamescom always leads to a huge amount of attention for gaming in general, and DTG will be keen to jump on that bandwagon. They’ve also been present at Gamescom to show off early gameplay and talk to journalists/YouTubers in the past.
It feels like there are only old people here who know about the game Train Simulator, but do not know about the game industry in general, kek..
Assuming Focus has any kind of presence at Gamescon would you rather learn about new content via a 30 second clip showing off all their latest games, or via the more indepth stream earlier in the day? And by the same token, what would be the point in doing the stream weeks before Gamescon and then having nothing still considered 'new' to talk about at the event. The stream is quite clearly intentionally timed.
DTG doesn't need to have its own booth at the Cologne Gamescom directly, DTG can participate in the Cologne Gamescom billboards because players who play trains are a minority group.
I wonder whether we will get something like in the past two years- a hype stream with small hints coming up every two hours or so!
I started with a Commodore Amiga 600 in 1992. IIRC, Silly Putty, Geoff Crammond's F1 (always came last), Jack Nicklaus Golf, Desert Strike, Lemmings 2 then later the Microprose MilSims and the cut down version of DI's Tornado. The only train related software were the SIAM traffic control games, some of which were put on the Amiga.
I started out playing games with a spectrum 48k in about 1985 or 6, computer games have been a love and hobby of great pleasure since I was a kid, I'm 44 now and only my love of railways and trains can most probably beat it.....
I suspect the overlap between Dovetail Direct viewers and Gamescon viewers couldn't be much smaller. I, despite being quite an avid 'gamer' (beyond and way ahead of TSW), have zero interest in game releases. I'll check the Xbox ones to see what hits gamepass, that's about it. Gamescon or the old E3, or anything to that end, have never really drawn me in and I don't think they will. I'm more of a "buy a game if I see it" guy than a "actively look for new ('trendy') games" guy. I'll be watching DTD. Without this thread I was unaware of Gamescon's existence. Doubt I'm alone with that one.
I started with a Commodore 64 back in the early 80's. Cost me $599 as I recall, a small fortune for me in those days. But I didn't use it initially to play games, I just wanted to get into computers. I didn't buy my first gaming machine until 1998, just a few short years before I spotted MSTS in my local computer store. I still don't consider myself a " gamer " though I do have a small library of strategy and adventure titles.
Never heard of Gamescon. I only play train sims, Football manager and very occasionally a driving game so I am another one who the gaming industry would despair at!
According to the Discord, DTG are doing a hands on with the Xbox Indie presentation at Gamescom, showing off TSW4 apparently?!
Started with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum in ‘82, played most of the games available then, notably JetPac which had me utterly hooked. After a period of addiction with Elite in ‘85, Southern Belle came along and was the first rail sim I had the pleasure of playing, then Evening Star in ‘87. Built my first Intel 386-based PC in the very early nineties and haven’t stopped since lol.
Well according to thw Gamescon 2024 website there are no appearances for DTG, Focus, or Pullup. So no TSW or TSC info there.
Seeing as we’re already veering off topic and showing our ages. I started with a ZX81 in 1983 and moved onto a Commodore 64. Then went to an Atari ST before switching to an Amiga and eventually my first PC in 1994. Lots of nostalgia for the ZX81, it even had a Flight Simulator! While I like modern PC gaming, I enjoy collecting for Retro handhelds such as PSP, DS and Vita. Just reacquired an original Gameboy with Tetris.
I wouldn't be surprised if that still saw TSW5 come. Ultimately you could demo TSW2 and it would still be broadly the same as TSW4/5 because, well, trains are trains.
They won't show TSW5 there if you look at the July roadmap all the new to be announced content is on the 4-6 months away section. So earliest release appears to be November. But now without beta testers I can see it being closer to the 6th month range.
I love the fact that a thread about a games con in 2024 has digressed and mentioned the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum. (Speccy owner since the mid-80's!)
I started with a ViC 20, then C64, then we got an Amiga 500. After that PC clones. For consoles Coleco-Vision was the first then NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Xbox 360, Xbox One and now Series X. I also have just because I collect Nintendo items i have a Wii, Wii U, Switch l, Gamboy original, DS and 3DS. And all my old machines as well.
Blimey, brings back the memories...started out with a Spectrum +3, then Amiga 500, 286 16 Mhz, 486 dx2 66.... Mostly remember playing Batman, New Zealand Story, f18 hornet on the Amiga. Chuck Yeagers Advanced Flight Trainer on the PC or Amiga, can't quite remember. Great fun!
Wait why doesn't that say Train Sim World 5? I'm may eat more words than I anticipated. If this is indeed a Rush Hour-style release, these words will taste a lot better than my previous ones!
This is my point, it says they are showcasing TSW4. Surely you’d want to show folks your upcoming products at a trade show?! Suggests it may well be we continue with TSW4 as the base.
Well have you not thought that perhaps DTG are at Gamescom as well this year? Afterall we have Lukas, Jan and several other German members of this community? The DTG Direct is pre recorded. So nothing to worry about. its been done like that for a reason.
I still got my original copy of Evening Star, I love that game so much I spent nearly a decade trying to find a decent spectrum computer that was cheap enough and fairly local to where I lived in my early 20's, occasionally still break out the beast to play it now.......
Not really. Saying "Train Sim World 5" and allowing a gameplay demo of a very WIP product would both be a giveaway and a bad advertisement. On the flipside, a TSW4 demo would be no different to a TSW5 one, just on TSW4 routes. The gameplay experience is the same. They want people into the franchise and currently TSW4 is the most recent entry. It's as simple as that, really.
