So last night decided to free Roam a 25 Wagon Coal hopper (Empty) train out of the PS on Rhur Sieg Nord. Spawned everything hooked it up and used KWS multi which I think is correct. Anyhow after a about 15 mins of driving the second 218 is billowing black smoke even when throttles are on idle! It looked quite impressive although in real life mark of a big problem!! Anyone else had similar and am I doing something wrong here?
I've noticed that all 218s not operated by the player produce alot of black smoke. I think it's a graphics optimisation thing. I'm on PS5.
Even the smoke has some sort of LODs . In the case of that emitter it has two if i am right. The second LOD is to save performance and therefor less transparent smoke since transparency has a high cost on performance. I tried to get it less dark but i have no idea how that works (yet). There is no setting to fiddle with. I think it's the textures mip-maps that are responsible for that effect. On PC it's less of a pain visual wise but seems to produce a black something on PS consoles. That's probably down to a hanging emitter. Happens. To reset that move away from the train until the emitters get deactivated and then come back. Should (could) solve that. Those emitters get suspended very fast and don't get any control-values anymore what makes them stuck. A problem since ever with all those on diesel trains.
Coincidentally I went yesterday to Elverlingsen Power Station as well. It was crying for the BR 218 and some decent free roam action. And voilá, it's superb. I'll attach some screenshots and yes, the diesel smoke comes around a bit weird, depending on the viewing angle. But if this is due to frame rate optimization I take it anytime over severe frame rate hits (like the ones with the old cooling towers on MML or DRA/DCZ).
