I would say, use what you are familiar with as both of these should be able to achieve the exact same result. Not much to say about that. If you really know your tools, you should have no issues with following tutorials made of the other program.

I think most people use Blender for personal projects because it's free (and more accessible as a result) and don't feel any need to switch later on.

Tomas9970 makes an excellent point about using what you are familiar with. As for me, I switched from 3DSMax to Blender after college, mainly because I no longer had access to the educational version of 3DSMax.

Not sure what's changed in 3DSMax recently, but I find the main difference is that Blender likes to use keyboard shortcuts for just about everything (x, y, or z to lock during selection translations or rotations, e for extrude, numpad to change viewport projection etc.) also, for a few years now Blender has had that little hand tool at the top right of the viewport that you click, and then hold the mouse button down while moving to reposition the viewport, which for me at least makes it just about as easy to use as 3DSMax. I like the amount of control it gives you for UV mapping, as well. Haven't checked the new version out.

To sum it up: 3DSMax has more buttons (lol), and I found animation in it is a wee bit more intuitive. Blender is free. Both have tons of tutorials on YouTube and are great choices.

These are just my experiences as a guy who started 3d modelling with Autodesk 3DStudio (no Max) for DOS in highschool, and had to switch because of $$$. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah the Blender shortcuts can get pretty crazy, especially considering that I'm still using the 2.7x hotkeys and right-click for selecting things.

btw. Do you guys use TexTools? I personally find it very useful for any kind of UV mapping work. Especially the ability to pick and apply texel density.
