After seeing that all data\SilverLining files got updated, I was curious to see if there's some noticeable changes - and there is! :)

triznya.andras This might be of interest for you.

So I did a freeroam run on Huddersfield in spring, Apr 1st, choosing "3D 4. Raining". And to my surprise, they got rid of the "sandstorm" yellowish sky in the morning. I also notice that the rain has been tweaked (shorter lines, moving faster).

Thanks for that, Sundog Software https://sundog-soft.com/features/real-time-3d-clouds/ and DTG for the cfg tweaking!

If you notice something concerning the updated weather engine, I appreciate your comments. Will check if the volumetric clouds have improved.

Sounds great, I will check. Thanks! (I noticed the files being updated.)
I don't use it much since I discovered I prefer some clouds in my shots but without blocking the sun. But it should be nice for official scenarios. Might run some NJCL to check it out.

I've actually come to rediscover its advantages again - the independency of ToD files, the correct daylight on any route.

I also find the night lighting and the shadows the moon is casting, and the transition from starry night to dawn on "Clear" to look very good. Also overcast (now fixed gray) and rain are superior to 2D weather imho.

I agree, just ran the first NJT GP40P scenario to try it. It's quite light (almost daylight at 5:30 am), but it might be an overarching attempt to make everything brighter. Or just the fog. Certainly a big improvement!

But is it better than AP weather?

You decide for yourself. I like the 3D overcast rain better. And the nights. 3D can colour the sun when its near the horizon, AP sun is always a white disc (as 2D weather is bitmap based)

On routes with AP weather, I have to admit I couldn't be bothered to mess around with dynamic weather, it's just not important to me. I'm on V1 only using Clear or Fair Cloud, and seeing the screenshots thread it's being used almost exclusively.

SL has the advantage of being built-in and adapting to the route's location automatically. So you have high sun at noon on Cajon, but lower noon sun in Alaska or OldVern's Sulitjelma route, and white nights in summer. And clouds hanging in the mountains which you can actually drive through.

AP's four season files are hardcoded to the 53th degree northern - so they don't fit every route in terms of daylight time.

I'm clearly for further development of a true environment, as opposed to the vintage and unflexible TimeOfDay bitmap model.

The 3D weather theoretically allows you to leave the atmosphere as space sims use it too - I'll build a test route just going up :)

Do you have any shots of a normal clear blue sky, say at 16:00 during summer in Britain? I always found Silverlining's blue sky way too bright and washed out. The config file left little for configuration too.

The 3D clouds look extremely basic too. I would personally prefer a static/detailed 2D skydome than a basic dynamic 3D one. Horses for courses...

The good thing we have both in TSC.

Mr. Maester, I didn't research scientifically (comparing histograms, updated files, etc.), would you say that the game in general has become a little brighter?
I mentioned above about that morning scenario (which is wrong but practical if you don't play in a pitch black room), but I'm playing an old Spring-Clear scenario on Hagen-Siegen and it looks much nicer. I'll soon post my weekly and I noticed that this is the brightest shot of them all. Make no mistake, this is a big upgrade.

Granted, cloudy weather tends to be a bit darker and this is actually noon.

Another fix I noticed, I can't fly below ground in a saved free roam now.
It may have been on their priority list, but I assume not. So I'm happy to see that generic code cleanup tends to fix things. Just a very personal side of my professional approach, I like tidying things up, unlike the usual team lead mantra, change as little as possible, focus on the story, nothing else.
