    Hello All,

I just purchased here the TS2021 program and 3-4 add on routes. The holiday sale appealed to me and I thought I would give this a try. When the program boots up it says TS2021 32 bit program. The graphics are OK and so far the system is working but am I missing something not running at 64 bit? is there a way to change to 64 bit? what difference would I see if any?
    Thanks Everyone and Happy Holidays

You should get an option window when you first start the game from the Steam client.

Missing something : No, not really. The game doesn't run that much different bar one major point, see below
Is there a way to change : Yes, in steam you can right click the game and choose to play 64 bit, or if you know how you can create a shortcut on the desktop direct to train sim 64
What difference would I see : The big difference between 32 and 64 bit is the allowable memory access. 32 bit is restricted to about 4Gb of memory so if you have a really intense bit of scenery with loads of trains on track (say Clapham Junction, Euston etc) then the game can overload the memory access for 32bit and crash. 64bit can access much much more memory

Unfortunately both can only access one processor core, have dodgy graphics capabilities etc etc but it's good for what it can do

Sorry that is incorrect - Ts has been multicore capable since around TS2013 - in the menu then you could choose to run it multicore or not.
It is NOT TRUE multicore (parallel code) but it does run on several cores albeit unevenly. I should say it may not run any better on a multicore pc than on a single core as posted previously by PookyHead.

    T
his is strictly not correct. If you run TS in 32-bit mode using WINDOWS 32-bit then it can only access UP TO around 3.5GB of Physical RAM. But the biggie is that it can only access 2 GB (max 3GB with a hack) of Virtual address space. This makes loading of TS quite inefficient and yes more prone to crashes.
The major difference between TS 32-bit and TS 64-bit is the Virtual Address Space. In the 32-bit version running in Windows 64-bit OS – TA can only access a maximum of 4 GB of VAS, limiting some access to all of the Physical RAM that is installed.
In the 64-bit version TS can access up to 128 TERABYTES of VAS and any amount of Physical RAM that is installed.
Again using 64-bit TS and Windows 64-bit OS means that loading TS is much more efficient using only one load into the Working Set. It is not memory access per se that causes OOM's in TS - but a mismatch between addresses in the VAS and the Physical RAM - resulting in an invalid page fault - OOM.

No one seems to be asking why the OP isn't getting the option to run either. Am I the only one who runs TS from the Steam client?

Then it makes me wonder why the OP hasn't noticed he can choose 64bit or 32bit at start up.

Please can you give the menu path as I cannot find that control (indeed haven't heard anyone mention it before)
Probably not, I have always found it easier to use icons on the desktop or shortcut keys, but then I'm old school and try to avoid using intermediate programs where possible

I'm old school too. Simple shortcuts on the desktop are a lot easier.
    I have one for TS20xx 32bit, another for TS20xx 64bit.
A direct link to the Railworks folder which then allows access to the Assets and Content folders
A shortcut to Utilities is also on the desktop and a shortcut to the Clear Blueprints bat file

I've got 32 bit, 64 bit (unlimited framerate), 64bit (limited framerate (15)) - all with Async enabled
    I've also got utilities
I've never cleared the cache, but never needed to. I have railworks set as favourite in windows explorer so it's always there

Yeah, I have all that, but tucked away in the start menu for when needed....

    Screenshot 2020-12-29 14.07.23.png

..and yes, that's an old school Win 7 Start menu running on Win10.

I just find running everything from the Steam client easier. TS is not the only Steam app I use, and in game chat features and ease of managing screen shots etc, is just handled more elegantly. Each to their own though I suppose :)

Exactly, but there are people out there who don't know the possibilities as well, so seeing what we all have could be helpful to someone somewhere

Just one other note, some older DLCs dont work on 64 bit mode for whatever reason. I know VRCs U30c has this issue, not sure what else has this problem though.

Batch files... I have icons that look like regular TS but they are actually .bats and open Steam, TrackIR, Raildriver, Thirdrails, and lastly TS in sequence.

You say you want easy ph, hows all that for a double click on one icon...

Steam is always open.. it launches on boot, so I only need ONE mouse click :) LOL

Seriously though... it's whatever you need. No right or wrong. In the context of the OP's question, or anyone else new to TS though, running it from Steam removes the issue, as you can choose which one you want easily enough without having to make any shortcuts etc.

I can make the 5 programs open with 1 click too by changing the setting open with double or single, :D

I've never allowed Steam to run on launch, never will either, There's very little other than essentials that have launch at start up permission.

Yeah, I used to be like that... Don't see the point these days, with multi-core CPUs, large amounts of RAM etc. I like it to be there as I actually use it to speak to people I game with... I actually use it as a form of game oriented messaging with friends.

For the same reason I run it from the desktop! :)
Instead of opening Steam, navigating to home, finding TS, then either right click + play or load the game page (quite slow with the feed that I usually don't look at) then click play and then every bloody time change the version from 32 to 64, then click Play...
I just double click the icon and it's good.

Except that sometimes I need to run 32bit.. like when I use the Armstrong Powerhouse class 40 for example.

The 32 bit editor is a bit more stable too, that's the reason I have both
