I have just posted this on the TSW forum but it could apply to this forum, Acronym’s (abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word) I have noticed are being used more and more on our forum, is this a lazy way of getting your message over, particularly for new members who have just purchased the sim and are looking for advise, even i have problems with some of them.? Here are just a few examples, ECML,WCML,RSN,NTP,WSR,ECW,PIS,DLC,FGW,DTG,IOW,LIRR,LOD. Mike
Sorry Mike, I couldn't resist. I know what you mean though. Unless one is familiar with the acronyms it is confusing, especially to newcomers here.
Typing West Coast Mainline Over Shap several times in a post about West Coast Mainline Over Shap becomes tiresome. It's not as if you can abbreviate it to just West Coast Mainline either, as there are many West Coast Mainline routes... so WCMLoS.
I was just asking michael hooley what he had posted If you want that info you need to look on a different forum
If anyone could explain the different passenger car codes that'd help me at least, I never know what all the variants mean, ok some I can work out like if it has an F then it relates to first class if it has a S then Second and G = Guard so I believe. Would be great to have a comprehensive list though. Sorry haven't Googled it because I'm trying to maintain the interaction with fellow TS simmers.

The same post as this... he means he has posted the same thing in there as well as here... obviously.
Good one Mike even acronym has an Acronym or two Alphabetical Code for Remembering Odd Names You Make up Another Cryptic Rendition Of Nomenclature You Memorize and who could forget these, as a schoolboy growing up in post-WWII Britain: NORWICH, BURMA and INDIA?
I remember when taking my amateur radio exam in less politically correct times, we had.... [removed by Protagonist - really not appropriate] Things have moved on.
Technical correction. None of these are acronyms, they are all abbreviations because none of them form a proper word. Whether using an unexplained abbreviation is inconsiderate or not depends on context. No one would object to abbreviations like BBC or USA being used without explanation and some have become so common they've become words in their own right such as radar (Radio Detection And Ranging). If your writing about a specialist subject then I think it's ok to use abbreviations without explanation that are in common use in that specialism, so I don't think DLC needs explanation here, neither does DTG! My favourite abbreviation is MFLA (meaningless four letter abbreviation). It's a great one to throw into a business meeting, it gets everyone nodding wisely, reluctant to admit they don't know what it means.
If your going to have a glossary of terms you should also include the differences between North American and British use. The ones I'm aware of are: Tie/sleeper Switch/point Caboose/brake van or guard's van Truck/bogie Railfan/train spotter Railroad/railway
