Hi, my 13 year old son who has cerebral palsy has been watching sim world on you tube. I have to say, it looks brilliant. What would be best console to buy? and we would like a cab controller? We don't have a pc. I've been trying to look it up and it's not always clear if certain controllers work even with xbox or playstation? It's going to be Xmas gift and I really don't know anything about this so would love some advice on how to get started, we will be looking to pick up stuff second hand, thanks for any advise

    Welcome :)

I’m afraid I have to be the bearer of bad news. Cab controllers (I assume you’re talking about stuff like Raildriver?) don’t work with any console. Some people have built custom set-ups based on an external keyboard (which do work with consoles) but that’s a lot of work you have to put in and requires the necessary knowledge and hardware. If you want to use readymade hardware, I’m afraid PC is your only option.

In regards to consoles, your main options are XBox Series S, Series X and PS5. Series S is a great budget option but severely lacks power, I would personally not choose it for TSW. Talking about Series X ans PS5, both are great options with their own drawbacks. XBox rarely gets sales for the many DLCs while PS5 has them frequently. Series X seems to have better overall performance but has issues with some cab textures flickering. The PS5 currently suffers from an issue with lack of stick dead zones in TSW making some operations a bit frustrating.

Series X vs PS5 is probably down to a lot of personal preferences and how much weight you attach to factors outside of TSW like Gamepass on XBox and the selection of exclusives on PS5. I’m playing on PS5 and enjoy it very much.

Hope this helps in any way :)

Would like to help since I also a have person with a similar illness in my family and I'm caretaker for him. But I'm only a PC player.

Hard to say which is "best". Depends on personal preferences. Don't know how limited his motoric capabilites are, but PC for me is the best option to control things with the keys on the keyboard. So you don't necessarily need a cab controller for playing this simulator. Cab controller are something for the real ethusiasts among us I would say.

Also since this game and its DLCs can get really pricey soon in comparison to others, maybe wait if he really likes the game really since the mechanics to control a train are not that easy. Don't know if he is even be able to do so with a controller.

Yes, this is a thing we all can relate to. Product descriptions are often lacking information or even be faulty.

Well, I don't know anything about the situation in detail. I only can recommend what I would do. Buy a PC and make it as comfortable as it gets for him. The PC version of the game has several advantages, like the new Editor for example, which can't be used on consoles. Another tip: The game platform Steam has a huge sale (until November 1st) for the game and its DLCs out now. If you're interested check it out:

Plus the developer introduced some expansion bundles lately to save some money. Link here: https://forums.dovetailgames.com/th...on-bundles-steam-exclusive.75374/#post-740102

    Just a hint:
You posted your thread in the wrong subforum and is off-topic here. This is for suggestions regarding new features to the game. Maybe post it here in the official discussion forum to get more and better answers to your problem:

Touching on what Lamplight has stated is pretty much the jist of it, but it depends on what your budget is, how far you are willing to stretch it, and where you are. In the US you can go to Microcenter and talk to them face to face or do it online, I bring this up because it's what I did, and purchased the Open Box PC and graphics card we are using now for less than 2k now I purchased the extended warranty also.

Also, I can understand where you are coming from, my one older daughter is special needs, and she likes to watch me play, and my younger daughter helps me edit the videos she just sits and watches and I look at the money spent err still paying it off :) as an expense that brings a little joy, we joke around and laugh and have fun. In my signature is a link to my YouTube channel and plenty of links to give you an idea of what it could cost if you want to go down that road.

Also If you are ready to go down this road, I'm willing to assist with info and a bit of guidance, just PM me and I will do my best to break things down.

Thank you all so much for your advice. I realise now that the pc set up is really for serious gamers. I think we will just go with a game console for now and look into types of controllers he could use like the new adaptive one coming out for ps5 or the subsonic arcade joystick? Keep it simple and see how we get on, thanks for saving me needless hours of googleing!!
