Hello everyone I don't ask anything, I don't say anything, I let you watch and you can say what you think DTG what do you think? https://store.steampowered.com/app/2517940/Century_of_Steam/ I would love to have this in TSW4!!!
The screenshots look good but I'll believe it when it gets a release date. And multiplayer only will be a huge turn off for many. In addition DTG still need to sort out the physics on steam traction in TSW4, before adding anything else.
As much as Id like multiplayer, trolls are a thing, clogging the line and all that bs its not worth it
It appears the detail of their steam simulation is absolutely fantastic But I agree if it's online multiplayer, count me out
It would be good to get some U.S. steam locos, if the physics and sounds were good. Cajon Pass, Horseshoe curve , Sherman Hill... The Big boy is available for recording, not sure about other locos, J class 611 etc. An American route set in the 50s with steam would be a good addition. Or an American heritage line.
The big boy might be too big under the current steam simulation. Not even small uk steam engines do a good job. The current simulation has to first improve
Even renowned UK developers like BMG, CW or Victory Works haven't yet released working steam locomotive for TSW. Though I guess they have the 3D models ready for exporting.
following the BMG and CW Discords, these guys are surprisingly competent and proficient at modeling. Able to do the shape file in two days, two days of mapping and texturing, copying their standard scripts in, and hey presto, a new loco!
Does the license cover the entire class of N&W Js or just engine 611 itself? There were a total of 14 N&W J class 4-8-4s made across 3 batches from 1941 to 1950. If they want a license to specifically for engine 611, which has been preserved, there are 13 other J class engines that were scrapped you could have - 600, 601, 602, 603, 604... Also I would have it as a period route set in the early 1950s along with other classes like N&W A 2-6-6-4s, Y6b 2-8-8-2s, and S1 0-8-0 switchers being represented. That's never going to happen though. TSW can't even get the current engines like the LMS jubilees, 8F and 4F classes with basic manual firing simulated properly, let alone something much larger with extra complexities like a mechanical stoker and feedwater heater. Century of Steam is looking to be the promising attempt I've seen in a long time at simulating the physics of steam locomotives in a modern game engine. The D&RGW K-27s and K-28s look as if they're going to be in the game.
You can't copyright a whole class of locomotive just because you own one! The original designers and manufacturers might have a claim, but not sure how far even that would stand up.
Even then, do you really think it's worth DTGs time, money and effort to deal with a single loco that they would also have to invest in finding a route, era and stock to go with?
OK so the locomotive at 16 seconds is that CGI of a Pennsylvania T1?. It looks fairly recent... When the loco has been tested and put in some fast running, I think there's a good chance of trying to take Mallard's record. In theory the T1 should be able to top 130mph. Obviously it's impossible to recreate for comparison, the same conditions as Mallards run in 1938.
If there are any American steam locos that are added to TSW, i hope the sounds of the diesel loco that always seems to be coupled in behind the steam isn't mixed in with the audio. When 3985 did it's freight run several years ago, there were no annoying diesel sounds.
Actually, yes it would: because it's registered as a trademark. A trademark can be just about anything as long as it is used to identify your brand; DTG din't invent the dovetail joint nor its name, but it's still their trademark and nobody else can use it, at least in the sphere of computer software. Neither the Beatles nor Steve Jobs invented the apple, which I have on good authority has been around since at least 1929 and maybe longer, but their companies engaged in litigation for years over using it.
There are many US kettles licensed for TSC and I simply don't believe DTG cannot get licenses for TSW. However, judging by the UK steam locos, I don't think that DTG is ready to build one for the US or Canada, certainly not something like Big Boy or Challenger or even a Berkshire or a K-4. It will probably need a third party and there's nothing doing there at the moment.
Incorrect; there are limits to what a trademark protects and whether or not a train sim including the N&W J Class without permission would violate trademarks is an open question.
"Trademarks owned by the Virginia Museum of Transportation The marks owned and managed by the Virginia Museum of Transportation include, but are not limited to [...] Images and Likenesses of the Norfolk & Western Class J 611 This includes the likeness of the Norfolk & Western Class J streamlined locomotive, including its shape, color scheme and unique features. " I note that the scope of the trademark registration includes " Model toy steam engines; Toy model train sets; Toy models"; and pretty much any ALJ would happily find that that includes digital as well as physical models.
Again, a court would not necessarily find that an accurate model of the Class J - whether physical or digital - would violate trademarks if made without permission.
