It's staggering to think that in 1970 there were dozens of Class I railroads in the United States, but today there are just 5 (plus Amtrak)- 8 in all of North America: CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, BNSF, Kansas City Southern, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific and Ferromex (plus Amtrak and Via). Well, today the business press is full of reports that CP is close to closing the purchase of KCS for $29 billion- and another one bites the dust.
