What a surprise when I saw these two showing up on the PlayStation store ! It’s finally happening and I really can’t wait to buy them: I don’t think they’ll have mod support at launch but, who knows, maybe later… ERRATUM: It’s for the Xbox One and optimized for the Series X/S but only for the PS5, so not the PS4.
I get why they're "next-gen" only, to my understanding those on last-gen ain't buying tons of new games. But with how light on systems these games are it feels weird seeing ETS2 & ATS be next-gen only games. They'd probably run better on 8th even now with all the recent upgrades than TSW ever has! Good for console players though, they're excellent games, and with SCS' track record I can't see any reason they'll be anything less than excellent on console.
It will be interesting to see how they approach giving the new format a price friendly path to acquiring the vast amount of DLC both games now have. They can’t just bundle them with the core game as that would be unfair to those of us who bought them over the years, albeit reasonably priced and very enjoyable, but still give a decent introduction to the huge areas.
These are not great as vanilla games, definitely need mods to enhance them. If its not supported on console as most mods aren't then I can't see it taking off much.
Unless they have buffed them, the default sounds are awful particularly in ETS2 and only mods really save the situation.
No, they're pretty good vanilla. I don't use mods and enjoy them just fine. That's especially true for a console game. Console games have never been where you go for the most accurate simulations anyway.
Great news for those of us who don't use the pc for gaming. I had often wished this would happen but didn't have much hope. Let's see how they handle all the additional content that already exists for PC but I will most likely buy both games at launch.
There won't be any difference except that on Steam, when a new DLC comes out, they often do bundles with a few bits of content included. Even if you own bits of content in the bundle, you can still buy it and usually for a discount over the standard DLC price. I bought the latest ATS DLC and got it for £2 cheaper than the standard DLC price by buying a bundle, even though I already owned the other content within said bundle. Consoles can't offer the same type of deals. DLCs seem to be incorporated into the core game once purchased and installed. I can see ATS and ETS2 being very complicated for console players unless it fully supports keyboard. On PC there are a lot of keyboard controls for different things. Not everything can be mapped to a controller.
Consoles do support steering wheels and other stuff, so that is the route many people would take just as they do on PC. On a standard controller, yeah there's a lot to manage, but that's true of most PC games to be fair. That's why so many console games have pop up menus for multiple control settings. It's really down to the player how in depth they want to get. You can get the 'basic" experience with just a controller, or if you want to toggle a lot of switches you can get a steering wheel. To be fair, a lot of the crowd for ATS/ETS are likely already using peripherals for other driving games. I'm more curious if the multi-player is going to be cross-platform or specifically separated by platform.
ATS will probably do terribly if it doesn't include a few more states off the bat. California is the only state reworked at the moment, and Nevada is by far the worst state in the US in game. Arizona has the RT 66 reworked coming, but that only focuses around I-40 in Arizona and New Mexico. So if someone comes in and sees the states like that, they may not pursue the newer better looking states.
I own both ETS and ATS on PC, but I think I'll pick up ATS and make that a console main (I own all current ETS map expansions, not a chance am I buying it all again). Absolutely didn't think this would happen. Remarkable just how good SCS are, tbf.
With the reveal of road kings, maybe scs see some competition coming their way and need some console sales.
