The train DB 83123 has a weight of 2418 tons, which means it is loaded. The LZB (BR 185 SKW locomotive) requires a speed of 120 km/h and the wagons have a speed limit of 120 km/h only when empty. (Why does the transport of coal on the RSN route have an absurdly high weight to length ratio? After all, there are longer trains in TSW.)
LZB, at least in game, does not take into account rolling stock limits (which for that train may well be less than the nominal 100 km/h wagon limit; I don't know). When running freight under LZB, just as when not under LZB, one has to calculate the Vmax for that consist and ruling grade, and then set AFB only that high and no higher. _________________________ Coal is very heavy
What would be the theoretical speed limit for that service of 2418 tons, if you were to read that particular table that I can never remember how to read? 70 kph?
For that one has to know what the cars are and how much each weighs. From that you can calculate the brake hundredths.
I picked up the 187 in the sales and (with the mods) found it to be a fun drive on SKA. But some of the 'journey' activities start by telling you that the maximum speed for this train is 140kph. In order to get there, you have to set the LZB to mode O (which AIUI is supposed to be for passenger services). Do these freight trains really go that fast, and is mode O ever used for freight IRL?
The instruction is highly misleading. In fact, plain wrong. 140 km/h is the mechanical Vmax for the class 187- but IRL that is only permitted running as a light loco, or if it's pressed into service as an emergency passenger loco (almost never). And Mode O as you say is almost always used in those two circumstances, although it is theoretically possible for a VERY short, light freight to qualify for Mode O. In reality, almost all freight wagons in Germany are limited by law to 100 loaded/120 empty. A very few can be run at 120 loaded; some older ones are capped at 100 regardless. And in any event, the max speed of the train might be lower than that, depending on its brake hundredth figure and the ruling (steepest) grade on the run- sometimes 90 or less.
