The Bay Area has a very diverse landscape and it would be a lot of fun to drive a train from the city by the Bay to the hills of Fremont and Walnut Creek.

Agreed - great pick in terms of diversity of landscape and operating territory. Plus, the lengthy stretches between stations in the suburban stretches (lots of expressway-median running) would seem to make it a bit less daunting of a task, given the nature of the BART route lengths (30-50 miles).
