Hello everyone it is me TFT and if don't live under a rock you'll know that Betelguese is due for Supernova anytime in the next few years. A Youtuber by the name TheRealPax has been doing livestreams of when it does go supernova. Back in December 2022 look what it did (not my image) It has been doing a lot of strange things recently like glowing and changing colour dimming and more. It is all over the news and here's how to find it. First you want to find the Orion Constellation and it will be in the left shoulder like in this image I recommend being ready for this and get your telescopes ready as it won't be much longer and it will be gone. It'll be so bright you'll even see it in the day as bright as the full moon. Thanks for reading and I'll see you next time.
Keep in mind that very soon in astronomical terms is even longer than in geological terms. Last estimates I heard for Betelgeuse's demise were in the range of 10,000 to 100,000 years from now. So, plenty of time to tell your friends and plan that viewing party.
Betelgeuse has supposedly being going to go supernova "within a year" since before 2012 (when all the cranks started going crazy over the Mayan calendar thingy). And as Calidore266 said, "very soon" in astronomical terms could be after human life has ended on Earth - if you took its 10-million year life and condensed it down to a typical human lifespan, "next year" would be like trying to predict a sick person is going to die in the next 5 minutes. Also, the pedant in me would like to point out that even if Betelgeuse appeared to go nova or supernova tomorrow, it would actually have happened ~600 years ago...
Thousands of years after the extinction of humans, an alien will find this thread and reply with “still waiting” In a way waiting for the death of this star will be rather like waiting for a bug you’ve reported to DTG to be fixed, the only difference being it will definitely happen. After its demise it will still be brighter than the headlights on AI trains included in the first loco bundle for the TSW3 core routes, which are like black holes due to rushed development. And that is how you turn a nonsense off topic post into something that belongs on this forum. If aliens did visit Earth now I think they would be quite impressed with how we make mashed potatoes but that is a different story.
My late grandfather gave the philosopher to us kids everynowandthen: "The strongest evidence that there´s intelligent life out there in the universe is the fact that they never have visited us."
Well there was a visible supernova (by telescope) a couple of weeks ago in the Pinwheel galaxy. When I say a couple of weeks ago, I mean it actually happened 20 million years ago!
Watching this, the Betelgeuse Supernova may happen in 10 -100 years from now.....impressive stuff when you start learning about this (beginner astronomer here)
Personally I think we're really just in the Haloverse and we are, in fact, the descendants of a long-gone species and we used to be an inter-galatic warrior civilisation. Now that would be cool.
When the Enterprise finally visits Earth, Captain Kirk will utter the immortal words: " Beam me up, Scotty, there's no intelligent life down here. "
