Do you mean in the game, or in real life?

I don’t have the route, so I don’t know, but I assume in the game it does nothing.

In real life it’s used for the train dispatch staff to tell the Signaller when the train is ready to depart, (TRTS = Train Ready To Start) and the Signaller then sets the route. In some cases setting the route would be a manual action. In some cases the route would be set automatically by ARS (Automatic Route Setting) or similar but it can still be programmed to wait for the TRTS before setting the route. Normally dispatch staff are instructed to ‘TRTS’ the train no more than 2 mins before departure time, once they’ve ensured that the traincrew are on board. The dispatch process itself does not commence until the signal changes to a proceed aspect.

I wonder whether it's laying the foundation for a full dispatcher gameplay mode.

What the TRTS does is shows an RA on the signal affiliated with the box (signal no is shown of box cover) when the key is on and right away is pressed. i dont know what purpose this does however.

Ah, in that case it’s not a TRTS - it’s an RA. RA stands for Right Away. When the dispatch procedure is complete, the dispatcher uses it indicate to the Driver that the train can depart.

In real life there would normally be a TRTS and an RA button in the same cabinet, but I don’t know whether that’s the case in the game.

There can also be a CD button. This means Close Doors, and is an indication to the Conductor or the Driver (as applicable) to…close the doors.

I own the birmingham to crewe route and if your right its strange how there is a cabinet at each platform, that when you hover over it is says trts, inside it is literally just a keyhole, a light and a right away button. strange

I suspect the keyhole is the TRTS and the button is the right away.
