Hi all, I recently purchased the BMG Rebuilt Light Pacific and I have to say it’s a cracking thing. I never expected it to be a hop in and go loco, so I’ve spent the past few days practising and reading the manual to try and get used to it. I’m almost there, but I’m experiencing problems when it comes to water injection. No matter what I do on the move, when I turn on the injectors no water goes in. I know something is happening, as the boiler pressure reduces as I would expect it to, but the water level goes down and down, until I get the “locomotive has run out of water” message. Is this an actual problem I’m experiencing? Or do I just need to develop a knack for it, in other words am I just being incompetent? Thanks in advance for your responses.
I don't have it but I do have the BMG Black 5 and Clan Line. Are you using the F4 HUD to inject water? Turn it off and use F5. That might sound scary if you only use HUD and that is what it was like for me but it is worth it. Use the I and J keys to open the injectors. I press them simultaneously (one does water and one does steam pressure to inject the water I believe). Press them again to close. Keep an eye on the boiler pressure level. If the Light Pacific is anything like Clan Line then it'll get through water incredibly quickly (apparently this is based on how thirsty they were in real life). If you want I can try and create a video tutorial tonight or tomorrow to show you.
Thanks, I’ve only ever driven it with the F5 hud so far so it can’t be the F4 HUD being problematic. They do seem like thirsty beasts so I probably just need to get used to injecting the water. I’ve been using the I, J, O and L keys (or whatever they are) already as well. I think I need to get myself some more practise in it to get used to how they work!
Bullied's pacifics had thermic syphons in the firebox, which he claimed significantly increased steam production, if that was true then water consumption would be greater with a well stoked fire. They had a reputation for having excellent boilers and being good steamers.
It certainly is true! It does have a very high water consumption, but I've started to get the hang of it now, using both injectors when on the move, cracking them open just before the boiler pressure hits the red line and taking them off again when the boiler pressure gets to around 219, then letting it build back up again. Is that the right sort of thing?
I found with Clan Line at least that firing was problematic. Pressing the key for stoking didn't seem to work once the fire dropped below a certain mass. I found the way round it is to press the fire button on the F4 HUD and then just worry about injecting water.
