A new UK freight locomotive is coming to Train Sim World! This time, it’s all electric, with the introduction of the Class 90 by Alan Thomson Simulation on Tuesday March 24th next week!

    The Story So Far...
We first revealed the Class 90 at the end of 2025 and followed up with further images in our Season of Reveals.

This is the first loco Add-on by Alan Thomson Simulation, following their first route Add-on with Manchester Airport Commuter.

ATS have kept us updated with their progress on the Class 90 over the last few months, building the locomotive with assistance from others in the TSW Community.

    Class 90 Release/Pricing Update - March 20th 2026
Hello folks, we wanted to update you on the release of the Class 90.

There was a miscommunication with the pricing of the product, and the teams have collectively made the decision to adjust it before release. In order to adjust it, we need to resubmit the product to the platforms. This has had an unfortunate knock-on impact on the release day.

So, the new price will be £12.99/€15.99/$16.99, and it will be released on Monday, March 30th.

We apologise for any confusion caused, and we thank you for your understanding.

Don’t forget to tune in tonight to see the Class 90 in action on Alan Thomson Simulation’s Twitch account tonight at 7pm GMT tonight, and on the official Dovetail YouTube and Twitch accounts on Monday 23rd at 7pm GMT. See you there!

    The Locomotive
    [IMG]

Derived from advancing British Rail AC technology, and originally being described as the Class 87/2, the Class 90 was designed to get the UK’s electric rolling stock roster up to speed, as widespread electrification had outpaced locomotive construction. The 87/2 scheme was seen as a way of quickly procuring an additional fleet of modernised locos based on a successful frame but was reclassified when the design changed significantly. The resulting fleet of 50 locos being one of the most iconic electric designs built during the BR era.

This mixed-traffic loco has been a staple of the UK rail network for over 30 years and whether hauling passenger trains at 110 mph or container freight at 75 mph, the Class 90 is equally at home. Powered by thyristor control, it was a modernised successor to the Class 87, offering improved solid-state traction and reliability.

Drivers often praise the Class 90 for its comfortable, ergonomic cabs and helpful driver aids like Speed Set, which maintains a set speed and reduces workload—especially on long runs.

This Add-on will highlight its freight capabilities, ensuring you can run to time up and down the West Coast Main Line without interfering with higher-priority traffic.

    Development of the Class 90
ATS stated in previous Roadmap articles:
“Members of the our team have taken part in a dedicated recording session to capture the full sound set for the Class 90, ensuring an authentic audio experience. Gameplay development has also been led by ATS, with SimuGraph work progressing in close collaboration with the excellent team at AND Games."

    Livery Variants
The Class 90 loco Add-on includes the following variants:
    • DB Cargo (red)
    • DB Cargo (blue)
    • Freightliner (grey)
    • Freightliner (old / green)
    • Freightliner (new / Powerhaul)
These all come with their own minor differences in details, including the relevant locomotive numbers for each livery.

“Livery creation has been handled by IMBUE, who’ve delivered a diverse and high-quality set of liveries that complement the pack’s flexible service mode. Players will be able to choose the freight run that suits them best, adding replay-ability and variety."

    Systems and Interactive Features
The cab of the Class 90 will have elements familiar to players of other trains in Train Sim World. The throttle and brake handles are similar in design to that found in the HST, as are some of the dials, yet accompanying these are traction motor gauges like those found in the Class 87 and 86 locomotives.
Being a freight locomotive, some switches to the left of the driver’s seat and the interactive operator interface for train length are like those seen in the Class 66. Players may also notice what look like shunting controls in cab by the door. In reality, these have been isolated out of use for many years and cannot be interacted with.

UK Safety Systems are fully modelled, including TPWS, AWS and DSD, as well as the new working Speed Set feature, and Intractable GSMR radio. As the machine room is not modelled, the DSD isolation is activated by interacting with a noise level warning sticker on the machine room door to represent a driver entering the room to enable / disable it. The Class 90 also includes a fully operational BIS and realistic Neutral Section functionality.

Multiple Working capabilities have also been implemented, allowing for heavy-haul operations with other Class 90 locomotives.

Train Faults are also present for players with the relevant Settings Enabled as part of the new Train Sim World 6 Core feature. These consist of wiper and pantograph failures.

    The Route:
West Coast Main Line: London – Milton Keynes
Gameplay for the Class 90 will be focussed on the first stretch of WCML introduced to Train Sim World between London Euston and Milton Keynes.

This arterial route connecting some of Britain’s major cities to London has seen plenty of action from its initial opening through to today’s services, with numerous amendments and redevelopments of stations along the way, as well as the ever-changing rolling stock that use it.

Services in a dedicated weekday timetable will originate at Wembley Yard, Willesden or Camden Junction hauling intermodal shipping containers north out of London, or from Milton Keynes bringing trains back into the city.

3 Scenarios are also included for the route, as is a 20 minute Tutorial in Training Center.
Players will undoubtedly wish to utilise Free Roam to take the Class 90 elsewhere on the UK network, such as the East Coast Main Line, or on other stretches of the WCML like Just Trains’ Preston – Carlisle route Add-on or Birmingham – Crewe, by All Aboard Studios.

Formation Designer and Livery Designer can also be utilised to create alternative freight consists, including use with Class 66 locomotives or passenger railtours.

Train Sim World® 6: BR Class 90 Loco Add-On will be available from 30th March on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam for £12.99/€15.99/$16.99

Please note that the Class 90 will be released on PC and 9th Gen Console platforms only.

Day 1 purchase for me as I’m frequently visiting Watford Jn and see these rolling through on inter modal ops. A welcome addition to the game, along with the 70 that’s coming, at last UK freight will have some variety. Hope gameplay packs will be added for other parts of the electrified mainline.

    Interaction with a sticker......hahahaha hahahaha that's absurd.

Yeah I must say the lack of an engine room is quite poor after the excellent stock on Stara Paka. Clicking a sticker to activate a safety system is silly.

Just a heads up the price in the article is wrong it should be £12.99
As for the lack of engine room it’s a pain I totally agree but with our first stock we needed to focus on getting the basics right before we were able to feature engine room details
We feel the price point reflects this pain quite well but you guys are the customer so all feedback is welcome

The Engine room would have made this a day one purchase. Not including it and interacting with a sticker, plus being put on one route only means it'll be a purchase when there is a sale on.

ok, in the end, it's a new loco but, $17.99 without engine room? why not $16.99 instead?

While an engine room would be really nice, it's really not going to bother me that the 10 seconds it would take to visit it and flick a switch in a drive doesn't happen.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect the DSD wouldn't be isolated in the real world so it wouldn't be realistic to click it anyway.

I'll be doing my normal CTRL enter, shift enter to turn the safety systems on.

For me not worth waiting for a sale for something I would rarely visit. I'm more focused on the actual drive and seeing something other than a 66.

The engine room missing is a shame, but the pack comes with 5 liveries, including a long awaited Freightliner branded loco. £12.99 is pretty good all in all (of course depending on quality which is TBD).

The part the value falls down on for me is more content being segregated in separate timetables, and of course this not appearing on more than one route is going to be a big hurdle for me.

Will be getting this but probably not for launch as it's such an expensive month already!

+1 on a solution for 85 different timetables for each route, and for ATS and AABS to come to a detente for the good of the game and its players

Cross City, Birmingham-Crewe, Hell, even Manchester Airport are all there for the taking.

Then you have the Just Trains routes which while wrong time frame is still fully electric.

It’s pretty surprising they haven’t even got this onto A) their own route & B) one of the few actual freight terminals in the game [or at least close to it at Picc)

    A potential day 1.

But I’m going to await feedback.

Very odd this isn't layered onto their own route, considering Class 90s run some of the services from Trafford Park.

Day 1 purchase and 1 step closer to a 91. Love the amount of livalries too. Dont give a monkeys about an engine room, thats just nerd overkill. Hopefully it will layer on to more routes in future

I can't justify it since it only runs on one route I don't like.
If it subbed in for ANY 86 or 87 on ALL those routes I can see that having value.
    Just WCMLS though?
    Sorry I gotta pass.
At that point it's only good for occasional free roam.

Yes it's a shame it doesn't layer on other routes, MAC, B2C, etc.
Fingers crossed we'll get it in the upcoming Trent Valley alongside the 70...

But it will still be day 1 for me for the exact opposing reason than you (WCMLS being my favorite route).

The only thing I hope for is that there will be as many layers as possible in the timetable (805, Nuclear, Intermodal, etc)...

Dont touch this kind of loco if you are not up to deliver the 1A product with the extra mile.

The class 90 is long long awaited from players enjoying uk routes. So my opinion on this hardly reflects the fact a cl.90 would better be in the hands of "just trains". No engine room? Sticker for activating safety systems?

Reminds me the Br187 desaster. So who is gonna release the cl.90 with the same quality standards as the 87/86?

Now if the creator of this is wise they will read the feedback, note the concerns, delay release and make the required adjustments. That would improve sales.

I assume 90050 at Crewe has been used as a base?
I have numerous photos from the cab should any comparisons be required.

Same here. It is already an expensive month as DTG churn out release after release. I want to be 100% sure this is going to be solid particularly as regards sounds. Price not really an issue as £12.99 is the going rate for standard train add ons, but quality and playability are the main concern.

Double sided coin as if this had been a Class 56 or Class 60 with a tiptop sound set I would probably have Day One’d it.

The JT WCML routes are set too early for it.

In reality it should appear on literally every modern UK AC route we have in TSW, but it is the most common on the WCML sections we have, so I’d have at least expected it to layer on WCMLS & MAC. Would have been nice to see it on AAS’ TT’s too (once they get them fixed of course) but seems pretty clear we won’t see these 2 devs playing nice for the foreseeable.

    1) It takes 10 days to change a price? Why not just change it into a "sale price" or something if that's easier? That's a huge turnaround on Steam's part if you have to plan price changes that far ahead.
    2) The Class 90's were started building in 1987. I think a year difference is close enough. It's not like the whole WCML would look different in one year. It would work on every WCML route in game and the ECML as well.
Big oversight that will cost a LOT of sales.

I have a suspicion this will be a loco ATS plan to resell a few times with various packs.

I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see the passenger variant come along, then there’s the BR spec ones you could have for JT’s stuff.

I agree that there should have been more routes for the class 90 to run on, but WCMLoS is not it. We won't be getting the Class 90 as it was when it first entered service, so it is not only a year different. If an era appropriate Class 90 DLC was made, it would be much better to bundle in the MK3 DVT so it could run passenger services as well. This might happen in the future and would be a clever way of doing it imo.

On a sidenote, if a Class 90 DLC is ever made for WCMLoS, I hope we get seperate timetables so we still have a chance to play before the 90s were introduced.

I believe this thinking is an example of pitting the "purists" against the "casuals" and losing most of the player base since most are the latter.

I don't however think that's ATS's reasoning because if it were, then it would feature on the modern WCML routes which it doesn't.
Putting it in a new timetable would allow you to continue to play the "old" and the "new" timetables. However, I really think the best answer would be just to tag it to layer into any 86/87 service and not limit it to one route at all.
Then if you don't want it... don't buy it or turn the layer off.

Not sure why more developers don't just make things to sub in based on similar vehicles and not limit their success.
There must be a good reason because I see it over and over and they constantly leave money on the table.

But that wouldn't make sense either as the 86 and 87 are presented as they where in the the 80s, the Class 90 is presented as it is nowadays
