Hello I’d like to introduce you to my new project from one place to make it easier to follow the project as it develops. I’d like to start the new thread due to my work not being clear enough on the one project. So this is the place for all information about release,,,process of making the livery and photos as I will place more photos to show more details but more so for user to get a better sense of the work done and colour in difference settings. And as a visual delight on some of the fictional work that could have been seen across the uk network. As with most of my work from day one and why most is conservative as it has to be a working livery not just decals randomly placed to appear bright childish looking. The work seen has been extensively researched right down to emailing the paint manufacturer of BR locos of the past. You’ll be surprised at what tricks are hidden right before your eyes. They are designed with respect to the subject matter and to the company that may be used or featured and many designs are restricted to avoid misuse of the respective owners copyright. So again the work seen will be done to a very high standard to ensure all relevant requirements are met that are set out in the early planning stages of development. Due to this the project will be a slow one to gain all relevant technical expertise and data before any work will begin again to ensure quality and accuracy as these will be paying respect to many that still remember the good old days of DMU and BR on 70s and 80s networks. So if anyone would like to get involved please do as your knowledge will be valued greatly in ref to Class 101/ 102 DMU as this project is all about the class 101’s. The BR Retro 101 Project. Okay about the project. I’ll start with a little about my back ground. I’ve always been into art and graphic design as far as I can remember,,I’d always look at something and then think to myself why does it look like that it could look like this. Be that ship design or aircraft design you name it so done quite well at school in my colouring books They turned out to be my maths book and English and French books,,I was and always have been drawing and designing. I didn’t really fit in with kid either as they was into football and girls and was into history and art,,lol. But In that time I developed an eye for blending the past with the new and an appreciation for contemporary corporate design. To mix it all together and focus it in way that the past could be seen again. In a modern era with it not being totally unrealistic. Again a working livery with respect to the key source subject. And that Key Subject is the Class 101. A Class many remember with many fond memories myself included like walking to Warrington Bankquay from Padgate Lane to go on holiday to Rhyl. I wonder what happened to the big model of the boat at Rhyl station in the mid 80s?. So yes I miss them DMU’s the smell and the whole BR scene. And why we have this project,,me doing what I love after years of doodling now using a computer,,,well I games console I moved on from me Commodore C64 and poor old Dizzy. The whole Project is based on that era using a modern Class as is the case with Class 801/1 801/2 Azuma Sets. Why this Class?. Well I just like the look of the sleek design and it gives me a way of blending the future with the past in a stylish way and a direction I want to move in. For my own personal enjoyment and for users of TSW I want to share my work and dream about if those good old days was here again. Maybe a should but LRB’s Reminiscing on. So I hope you find this Project Interesting and as this post is quite long already I’ll do a second post regarding the process behind Set 801101 Unit 821101 I named “Metro Cammell” to 825101 also being named “Washwood Heath” the name of the builder and place name In Birmingham. The pictures I have left unaltered except the first photo so you can see the colours as they are in game Ive not edited them or swayed away from the in game photo mode colours. The Livery will be available later today Wednesday 29th on CC under the livery code of TSLP101. I hope you enjoy this Project and thank you for your time reading if you reached this far More day light ones will be available next. Thank you. Lee (TSLP)
The day light Photos so you see the difference in contrast between light and dark. I’ll explain more in detail about the selection of the paint in the next post later today. Plus more on the development stages. Cheers again folks. And Bye for now. Lee (TSLP).
Hi folk sorry for not posting the information I said I would. Now I’ll just post about the colour scheme today as it may appear to bright or look like a toy. I had quite a difficulty time in finding the right shade that worked in all light levels. As you will see in the following pictures of me trying to find the right colour and then the right reflective values. I also found with the new reflective feature on the newer TSW4 which is fantastic by the DTG, because you can get that look and depth in the paint a joy yet a hindrance at the same time. Not a bad thing,,just a pain. Example: The first colour am testing one or two shades I have already used in the past. The closest ref and data for this I believe is a colour Spectrum Blue. Mixing a blend of Greens and blues with the layer behind the same colour but with more grey added. The last pic is the same (EDIT) shade but due to the large amount of open colour at this point looked just to bright to much on the eye with the blue taking a large amount of area up. I did try these shade again on the complete livery with a decals on but even then still looked to much. The colours of the white and light grey was adjusted to be a more off white as this will effect how the eye and the blue appear together. Now I couldn’t help thinking to myself that this was looking more like a Monastral Blue where I was looking for BR Rail Blue to cover 70 to mid 80s era the original colours used on the Class 101 DMU. So again I started to test other colours I have used in the past with slight changes to accommodate the new reflective features. Using more of a green hue but adjusting the blue with less grey. At one point I was using a brushed Steam blue shade. Now as you can see I was testing firstly in mid day sun light setting, clear. Many have commented that the light is to bright in the game the gamma is to high. Now I’ve have always thought that yes the light is to bright I found this out in my early days of trying get a right colour. And now with the new features on TSW that gloss look I so love because again you can see the difference in levels of depth in the paint work has added a new element of light refraction or light reflective values (LRV). This will completely render some of my old paint choices useless in these conditions. So I started playing around which again I have to point out is very frustrating and time consuming in that every time I make any alterations in this case just colour I have to close the game down for this changes to take place. They will only do so if and this is only way at the moment found remedies the problem is to close the game down completely go into route from main screen load on route or free roam exit then go into editing to then help with freeing the camera lock. Why it takes a week to make one of this liveries at the moment. The outcome, well in the end I had to use the right colour I get that or what’s the point?. But the more I was convinced a colour was the right one during editing it just wouldn’t look right. The BR Rail Blue would appear to green on the spectrum used, sure that it was a true representation in editing but again was way out. I tested over 30 odd different shades depths you name it for it to look right in just open conditions before looking how it reflected less light because this was another issue. When I found the right one I then had to test in darker conditions this introduced the appearance of the shade or LRV in lower lighting conditions so again had to be adjust again. Find and stick to the right tone but then find it look completely dark or even black in some lower levels or light after I working in better lighting conditions. The only way I found to get around many issues like to bright or washed out,,,to dark or black looking in darker conditions was to try take into consideration these higher levels of gamma of light in game all the variables then and only then could I try settling on a colour that worked. It had to work in all lighting conditions and being used in such large amounts doesn’t really help in it being full in the face bright. On the original 101 liveries a more broader white and grey lining was used so that used and took up more space than the blue,,thus making the blue appear darker in tone. This is why I have tried to break up the blue by adding more off white and upper liners to break up the upper bulk of blue in the space between the upper window edge to roof line of carriage. More on the design elements in a later post. So I hope by giving some more information regarding 801101 a lot of thought went in to the getting the right colour and balance correct. I have also noticed one or two issues in the photos on more of a closer inspection. Which annoys me a little as every effort is taken to makes sure they are right the first time in editing and I must say on a 9 car set can be mentally exhausting to keep double or triple checking. But I have noticed the odd slip of a decal after quality checks the first time around. Don’t get me wrong I am not perfect, yet in this case I know they was bob on set the first and second and third time I checked. It’s why if I try help anyone I’ll always mention the twist and give the decal needing attention the attention they need for your livery to be what you and users deserve. There has to be a high level of respect to detail in my personal opinion,,,an eye for detail is a must. So I’ll get those issues fixed soon. Thanks again folks. Lee (TSLP).
Hello again,,,well today I’ll be briefly explaining how this livery was planned why certain designs choices was made. As with this one I was researching laws and regulations and also trying to find a standard identity on a basic level for BR of the future. I’ve also felt with many great companies corporate image of the past say like BOAC (Yes it planes) but the point is what great design with excellent planning on colour palette used. The same level or even surpassed that high level of rebranding on a national level like it was with rationalisation. Where many great logos was designed and effortlessly executed in the BR corporate identity manual to me is and was a great piece of design that still lives on in the minds of the travelling public, on the stations and tickets up and down the country. That image gives you the sense of trust they know what there doing,,well in a way during national ownership before,,privatisation and sectorisation. So this is why with many of my projects it’s all about what could have been or could still be by blending the traditional and the new together in a respectful way. Also like I have mentioned before in a believable manner in a workable livery. Okay so where to start. Well I’ll start with the front end as with this one and with all fitting the design into or around the design features of the class 801/1 can have a great impact on many designs elements or how the whole look of not just the leading or trailing but design elements built into the rolling stock. It must all work as one and must take into consideration some basic principles or regulatory requirements. So I was looking and will be doing further studies on laws and regulations to hopefully help better understand these principles of say exclusive design. To build this in to future projects and see how regulatory framework restricts a designer or in this case with my design helps. The front. So the front end,,,a very sleek design and one that seems to look right at home after replacing such a famous icon in the Class 43 HST sets. I needed the design to fit the lines of the 801 work with them not fight them yet add something different to the front end as this is not a ICE or HST as such in the overall look. This is to meet the core design requirements of the project based on the class 101 DMU and work them into the of the class 801. I also try and break away from the old laws of yellow on the front end as I believe this is no longer legal requirement,,with a few exceptions. I’ll have to do some brushing up on those rules again. But as you can see I settled on Signal Yellow to met the 101 look of full yellow end. You can see tho I have cut the yellow under the lower head lights line as to give it a more natural commuter look. It’s not meant for express really and why I used a 801/1 Bi mode 5 car set. I’ve have also tried to add a different mix of high vis yellow. I must have a strange fascination with the look. Especially around the doors tho where there is a high risk of trip or being caught in the door. It also adds a clear means of escape in the event of rollover or fire yet I do need to check visual impairment laws on what colours are need to met theses regulations. You will also notice I’ve tried to blend functionality into the design like previously mentioned the white line to blend the information boards break the blue up so it’s not full on. The use of red strips for bikes and then blue for wheel chair and then yellow for first class. A way of blending a colour palette used on DMU into a new modern functional design. And if possible a standardised design. A few pictures during development. More on separate post.
Continued…. You can see where I’ve tried to bring it all together in one design by also keeping and working with design elements of the class 801/1. Well I think that’s it then for some basic information about 801 101 Set. I will be and am working on 7 projects at the moment so turn out will be slow. And I do have some personal issue that sometime prevent me responding so please bare with me on that front. So as always thank you for taking the time to come hear and read over my long and sometimes drawn out explanations. The main thing is I hope you enjoy this project and the liveries that will be shared with you. It’s my passion for what I love to try my best at bring something new and innovative to live in the Train Sim world. And why I am also ways open to the community on projects or liveries they may want to see done in fictional or what if like some of my early small liveries of the class 37s if they hadn’t been scrapped or lived on. Why you will so many scrapped 37s used like 37 373 “Lighting” in old liveries and then fictional ones. Hope you enjoy and have fun. Bye for now folks.✌ Lee (TSLP).

Hello, I thought I’d wake up this thread for one or two community members that are interested in this theme ✌
