On East Coastway I noticed this board on the way to eastbourne. Can someone tell me what it means/what you should do.
Hi there, It’s for the level crossing. The X denotes it’s a wrong direction move (travelling in the opposite direction to the normal direction of travel and is unsignalled) and the 45 is the maximum speed in mph between the board and the crossing. The crossing is fitted with wrong direction controls hence why a speed board is provided and the speed is quite high. If there were no wrong direction controls, you’d have to proceed at caution and stop short of the crossing to make sure it’s clear before proceeding. Wrong direction moves come with a whole set of rules. Unless it was single line working all arranged by a pilotman, the whole move would be done under caution anyway so 45mph is academic.
