This is not strictly a suggestion but I think worthy of mention. For anyone looking for future route or locomotive ideas for the UK, I think that the vast railway book series written by Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith and published by Middleton Press are a great source of material. You get to see routes around the UK both current and former/no longer in existence as well as many of the various types that have used the routes across the years. I personally have around 25 books in my personal collection and find the information amazingly helpful and valuable. These books are also somewhat useful as route learning guides.
