When NWSER Route from Batterby Wilby to Brane? (featuring an existing Emu and class 66) Its true though, been to the UK once and every announcement i remember sounds like this, why do they need to announce EVERY stop? Reminds me of the almost podcast lenght announcements in Switzerland where some announcements play in German, french, italian and english.
Meanwhile on some, not all, of the older units in the dc metro don't work at all. All you get is the intercom on sound, silence, intercom off sound lol. Or just unintelligible words
The content of each announcement here is mandated by government. Under Accessibility rules Must announce Current Station, Destination and Next Station while stationary in a station Must announce upcoming station ~ 2 mins out Full Stop list must be given after major stations or if it's been a while since the previous stop. See it Say it Sorted comes from Gov too, the exact wording is specified and the announcement must be made after a stop if it's been over 30 mins since it was last announced, or after major stations. So all the noise about cutting the announcement clutter won't go anywhere because it's the compulsory ones that annoy everyone.
Lol facts! We were in DC not long ago when the 7K trains got pulled, so can confirm that little fun fact. Of course we also have the opposite side of the story here where nobody gives a damn enough to listen to the announcements, even when they're clear and articulate. The Harlem Line is a perfect example... The M7s have very clear, precise automated announcements both spoken and shown on LCD screens. Many trains traveling south from Southeast and Brewster go express after White Plains, only stopping at 125th before terminating in GCT. In addition to the automated announcements, the crews will start getting on the PA around Pleasantville to tell passengers this. Despite multiple calls all the way up to White Plains that "This train is an express to 125th Street and Grand Central after White Plains" and to "Please change here for local service to the Bronx", you inevitably get a bunch of people that panic after the train blasts through Botanical Garden.
I was just telling someone about this video the other day and for the life of me couldn't find it. Thank you!
It’s hard to come up with comedy made up British place names. You think of one that sounds great and funny only to find it actually exists on the map.
Yeah, and you guys brought the same town names over to Connecticut and Massachusetts when you colonized.. thanks for sharing those gems! lol
I remember the advert with Vinnie Jones when he was going through Crapstone. That’s just up the road from me.
I do tend to appreciate the conciseness of Finnish train announcements. When they have to be repeated in both Finnish and Swedish - and sometimes English and even Russian as well - having the message itself be short and limited to the most relevant info really helps. On commuter trains, that means most stations just get "Next station: Pasila" and for interchange stations also a summary of which platforms to catch other commuter trains from. Trams and trains also tend to have information screens in the passenger cabin, which are used to convey all the information that would otherwise have to be regularly repeated. For example, they were used to highlight the mask regulations during the pandemic, and on the long-distance trains they even pointed out that you could buy individual masks and small bottles of hand sanitiser from the conductor. I think it's assumed that people unable to read these screens will have some other way to obtain this information.
