It is old news, but everything seems to have ground to a halt at Caledonia Works this year against the usual fast and frequent releases. It is the upcoming Crab that really interests me, currently a big gap in the game. The 4F and previously announced GW 14xx already exist from other developers. It is true there is a very old Crab model in existence, but it doesn't really cut modern mustard. John
I'm surprised that Caledonia Works are duplicating locos already available. I know the existing products aren't new, but with the Steam Sounds Supreme sound packs they work quite well and I don't see enough extra in CW's products to replace what I've already got. There are plenty of unusual or numerous loco classes that haven't been modelled yet. I would have thought those would make better subjects. Everyone has to have a 'Big Bertha', especially as the Lickey Bank is in game!
Same as you, looking forward to the "Crab" to make an appearance. My "era" is very much British Rail, which surprisingly spanned almost 50 years 1948 to 1997.
I spoke too soon! The Fowler 4F has just been released: https://caledoniaworks.com/product/mr-lms-4f-pack/ John
I would disagree. Usually I love unusual types for the game but CW has already done quite a bit of that with countless obscure locomotive types already and there are plenty on offer; so having a remake of a very old model with CWs quality and attention to detail on a locomotive type that was common in the real world is most welcomed in my opinion. It also makes it more easily accessible; it might be a pain for some to buy the 4F on Steam and if you want the better version you have to go to third party sources such as SSS for their enhancements. While with the new CW release it'll have an incredible amount and all you need for the 4F in just one package to download; no requirement necessarily aside from Quick Drive consists.
Um, not quite as far as I am concerned. Hopefully somebody will produce some grubby BR liveries for them. I can't say I ever saw an immaculate 4F. They really do sound nice, though. John
From what I can see they have a pretty solid strategy. They are producing many grouping and pre-grouping era steam locos that have not previously been modelled by other modders, but are sprinkling in a number of more high profile/popular classes that are or were already available but looking a little dated. I would venture a guess that they sold many more copies of their Gresley A4 than any of the Caledonian or LBSCR locos, and the sales of the headline grabbing top-link classes are helping to fund the development of the more niche-interest ones.
