As someone who regularly checks the steamdb for forthcoming TSW2 updates, I just saw that Cathcart Circle has just received a name change. It is now know as Scottish City Commuter.

    Link: https://steamdb.info/app/1490112/

The thing I want to know from the community team about this is A: Is this true that you've changed the name of Cathcart Circle? and B: Why has been done? Is it to make this route be in line with the routes coming with Rush Hour? Who Knows?

    "Scottish City Commuter"

    That's worse than London Commuter.

Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling are all cities in Scotland and are part of the Suburban network (Stirling is almost at the edge).

Any route in the future (if, they return) in this region could have this name.

Why on earth do these vague names have to exist - beyond marketing. I think nearly everyone prefers to know what the route is.

If I recall correctly, one of them said in a recent stream that routes with generic names sold more than ones with specific ones. If true, can't blame them from wanting to sell more.

Yeah, this name has been in the PS Store for a while now. It's a really weird name for a route like the Cathcart Circle. You'd think that consumers would be more interested by Glasgow, as it is a busy city. And the whole selling point of the route is the actual circle itself, with the exciting branches out of Cathcart as well. You can't really know about that when the route is basically named "Generic Commuter Route".

If people buy it because of this generic name, then well, its not DTG to blame for that. I mean, in the end they have to pay their bills and the employees. And to be fair. "Superhighspeed English Express" sounds better than "Edinborough-Glasgow Main Line" The Example is a bit exaggerated but hits the point.

    Scottish City Commuter - seriously?

Which Scottish city are we talking about? DTG are really on this trend of 'dumbing down' the names of routes, just because a few people might not know where it is.

Well I think Edinburgh - Glasgow would (provided they use the dumbed down names) be called "Scottish InterCity", which, as much as these names are a bit "why?" worthy, that doesn't seem too bad, tbf
    Pain

Exactly, it's vague (the main issue), things like "Great Western Express" and such are alright, but "London Commuter" and "Scottish City Commuter" are taking the mick.

Especially when Google exists. Cathcart Circle Lines is the real name of the represented route (Shields Rd depot excluded, of course), so why change it?

Can’t help but feel that ‘Glasgow Cathcart Circle’ would have done the job just nicely.

Am I the only one who recalls Sam or someone else saying the complete opposite a while back? I hope the rest of the existing routes don't get renamed. This simplistic naming system brings up a question from me, if London commuter represents London- Brighton, what would Great western Express be called?

Knowing DTGs business practice in the last 3 Months, Probably ' London InterCity'. Its like Boston Sprinter where it could represent ANY route that is in London and has InterCity Services. Its like London Commuter where that could be ANY SINGLE ROUTE that has even one station in london, and its like Navhaker Dresden where it has the name of only one of the Many Towns in a SINGLE ROUTE. If this is true and DTG is renaming routes (think of it, most of London Commuter is not spent in london. Most of GWE is not spent in london. Most of Bostion Sprinter, is not spent in Boston.), I would HATE to see what Long Island Rail Road, Northern Transpennine, or Even worse, Isle of Wight would become? New York Commuter? Leeds InterCity? Shanklin Commuter. Guys, I think we should prepare for the worst. If this happens. It will kill TSW as we know it. We CANNOT let DTG join the Oversimplication Group. These routes have other major towns and citys: Slough. Reading. Manchester. Huddersfield. Hempstead. And Evn RYDE

GWE wouldn't be changed, it's name was the simplified form.
Same applies to routes like Rapid Transit and such.

IOW would be Rivet's call most likely, and the others would just be taking it to another level on DTG's end.

For an international market Scottish City Commuter is a far better name than Cathcart Line. Weird that they are changing the name after release though.

Personally I think the whole of Dtg's marketing team should be retired and the savings put to more developers.

Scottish City Commuter is such a hilariously bad name - are they never going to release another Scottish commuter route? Talk about being shortsighted. 'Glasgow Cathcart Circle' or 'Glasgow Commuter Circle' would be more descriptive.

Rapid Transit is also a terrible route name

I can't blame DTG for doing this if the product sells better with such a name. I blame whoever is more likely to buy the DLC because of this.

But hey, at least we can help DTG here and come up with some other names for the rest of the DLCs.

LGV Mediteranée -> French Speedy Line
    Clinchfield -> Curvy Coal Hauling
    etc.

Honestly, most of my annoyance is that I have to change my spreadsheet now. ;)

Honestly, though I can see this use of generic/vague names for route causing problems down the line. There are several potential routes which could easily be called 'London Commuter' same for 'Scottish City Commuter'. Every time I read 'London Commuter' I have to take a moment to work out which line it actually is.

It's just unnecessarily confusing in my opinion, especially when these routes are already named in real life.

Sam confirmed this tonight. If you're a rail enthusiast looking to but DLC Cathcart means something to you. If you're a casual gamer you wont recognise Cathcart as a potential purchase as much as Scottish Commuter. Its' a sales ploy, more money hopefully means better game so I'm fine with it. I'm curious about said scottish commuter route but not until its fixed in a year or two by Adams team

Doesn't really need much fixing. Turn the headlights up a notch and maybe (doubt it) add a certain SPT livery. Can't think of much else to do.

I think for me (and I'm speculating here) as I'll hold my hands up to losing interest is it just needs to be a bit busier. It put me off two being one train and it just made me think it's an outdoor Bakerloo. Not totally against it, just not convinced as yet.

The empty Glasgow central is probably the biggest miss of the route, but otherwise, it's a really nice experience. Considering its length it offers 5 different service routes and depot runs as well. The scenery is mostly on point and the train is really enjoyable. If only many other routes were as good. Hopefully, it will one day be given another EMU so that the two classes can spread out and perhaps have some AI traffic going to and from portals as well.

Well, in 2014 the circle line was virtually 314 exclusive, with the 380s doing a couple (2/3) services at peak (not DLC worthy tbh, I'm not debating this for like the 700th time), Glasgow Central is quite dead feeling but you can't do anything.

And the route is near enough realistically timetabled, minus the missing train on one of the branches.

Other than that it's near enough a flawless route.

Glasgow Central and all the other stations are fabulous, the scenery is bang on, the 314 is 100% (minus those damned lights), the sounds are fabulous.

I don't think it's similarities to Bakerloo (a route with many flaws) should put anyone off tbh.

Most of the Scottish routes are quite good, and are fairly popular suggestions.

Edinburgh - Glasgow is probably the most requested Scottish route - even before Cathcart came out.

Fife Circle (I think Edinburgh - Dundee/Perth fits better but Fife Circle is good) is probably second.

The West Highland Line (I'm surprised it doesn't find itself at the top) follows

The suburban routes and other Highland routes all follow that.

So hopefully we see some of those classics return!

Why don't they give them even more generic names? Richard, for example.

This new simplified version of naming things is so great! I can't wait until three different 'names' is too complicated and they simplify it down to two! /s

    Boston Sprinter
    London Sprinter
    Faversham Sprinter
    Munich Sprinter
    Aachen Sprinter

    London Commuter
    Glasgow Commuter
    Dresden Commuter
    Wuppertal Commuter
    Hamburg Commuter

Bakerloo Line can become "Subway Commuter" and the upcoming 1938 Tube Stock can be renamed "Old Subway Commuter."

I understand generic names (don't like it) but do they think that international players don't know that Glasgow is in Scotland? Even if we grant their premise of simple names = better sales, 'Scottish City Commuter' is too far - there are multiple cities in Scotland and eventually they will (hopefully) have routes in TSW2.

I think its a poor name as it suggests it is the only Scottish city commuter line that exists, what happens if you want to do another one? Scottish city commuter line II? It just lends more to the people who say no-one understands Scotland and thinks its a northern region of England...

As people above have hinted at, know your market. the people playing this game are smart enough to know the routes and locals without it being dumbed down to the lowest point.

my guess would be due to the increase in players from the epic and game pass release. It’s too good of an opportunity not to entice people to buy. I am surprised theres not a big sale with all the new players here now that could be buying. I keep looking for some decent steam prices. Chuck a couple of 50% discounts on some routes and trains and I’ll pull the trigger (Except that IOW and Arosa donkey)

There are some great conspiracies above. All in the oven for far too long. For us more established players we will know the route name, for the more casuals they’ll see it advertised differently.

i personally don’t give a monkeys if it’s called “18 mile route round irn bru lane with a ufo thrown in” if it’s good.

If I think to how last routes could be named based on my experience these are some suggestions

HLL - 50mile drive with no wagons and wrong coach route
CRR- Won’t see anything at night but the train will grow on you route
SPG - Full throttle no speed freight route
Munchen - Busy German route , cool train
    Boston - trainspotters dream route
West Somerset - only use first gear near beach route
GWR - Hammer to floor route with a 125
Tgv - fast as fooooooook route

End of the day, more sales is more money which hopefully gets those horrible bean counters to wind their neck in and allow the team to give us branch lines, more staff, better development windows etc to keep us happy.

Who knows the extra cash may even speed steam up or multiplayer and give more people to crash into us with ;)

Yawn. It's just marketing, like Pepsi changing its label design every few years. Doesn't really matter.

Some names like Boston Sprinter are annoying but acceptable. They at least tell you where part of the Route is set. Scottish City Commuter is too far. It implies that either Cathcart Circle is the only train line in Scotland or that there will be no more Scottish routes ever

There are bigger problems in TSW than the names of the DLCs, come on.

For us it won't change anything, we follow the game closely and we know each route, but TSW is not ZuSi, it also aims to be attractive to people that are not so familiar or knowledgeable about trains as we are.

Before TSW I didn't have any idea that Cathcart Circle existed, of course being passionate about trains and TSW I did some research on the route, watched the streams and then I understood what the route was all about. But remeber the "average buyer" won't do any of that. We don't represent the majority of the playerbase...

"Glasgow Cathcart Circle" could be to me like "Cintura Nord di Roma" is to you, and I wouldn't be surprised if "Rome Suburban Commuter" would lead to higher sales.

I get that it seems frustrating but getting hung up in this meaningless stuff is a waste of time, if more people buy the DLCs, they could put more effort and time into making them, which is what we want, right?

If you actually read what's written in the SteamDB page, it says that the Store Name is still "Train Sim World 2: Cathcart Circle Line: Glasgow - Newton & Neilston Route Add-On" so don't get your panties in a bunch.
