So with the release of a mod for the BR218 which enables us a prompt at the engine room doors to switch the cabs without having to walk outside, I remember this idea.
Wouldn't this be the most easiest way there is, to enable us with all locos to change the cabs without having to get out? The 110,111 and Vectron come to my mind right now.
This would be such an easy solution that I think everyone would like, so we don't have these discussions about engine rooms being accessible. A nice compromise I'd say.

Hmm why not? Could come in handy :)
Honestly I myself don't mind walking to the other end, gives me a little bit of immersion.

What I really would like to see is an button in the menu after finishing a service, which says something like "The train departs again at 16:25. Would you like to do this journey?". And when you click on it, the train is being reserved for you instead of handed over to the AI.
On some routes, the return times at the end stations are quite juicy and sometimes the AI takes over while you walk back along the train. Happens to me frequently on Maintalbahn and Salzburg-Rosenheim, especially on shunting operations.

I see where you‘re coming from. I didn‘t mean in general skipping from one end of the train to another, but rather for the locos which don‘t have an engine room modeled, where you have to get out of it and back into it to get into the other cab. Instead of doing that while shunting (for example in the 218, vectron, 110, 111) I‘d rather just hit „E“ on the door to the engine room to teleport into the other cab of the loco.

    Ah, I misunderstood. My bad!
That's a function I'd use too! A good workaround for the unmodeled engine compartment. Always having to get out of the loco, walk to the rear and get back in can get tedious. Especially when it's raining... :o

Honestly I'd like it more if some scenario planners would write in less cab changes. There's been times on some routes where I've had to change cabs each time to pull in and out of sidings several times, sometimes even running light engine. No crew is changing cabs for a reverse move less than a quarter mile light engine. Even running with a consist, if you're only shoving it a short distance you wouldn't waste the time to change ends.

I assume you’re talking about US content, but for German content, there are not enough cab changes in the scripts for scenarios. If you’re shoving a consist, then you’re not going to change since someone with a radio must be at the other end anyways (official rule). But if you’re driving a light engine, you change cabs for every change in direction. Doesn’t matter if it’s 50m or 500m - you change ends. The scenarios are way too happy to let you drive in reverse.
