I've just played service 2D93 Saltburn - Bishop Auckland through Journey Mode and there was no engine sound at all except outside the loco where it sounded like the engine was idling constantly regardless of throttle position. Then later in the journey even that disappeared completely. The whine of the generator changed as more power was added but there was no diesel sound at all, except the constant idling sound for the first part of the journey. I repeated the scenario and the engine sound was working up until a certain part, when I was at full throttle and then reduced to notch 1. As soon as I started throttling down the engine sound disappeared altogether again. NB - I got the patch for fixing the sound before I purchased the Class 31 DLC.
