I've got both the DTG and MKS Class 73s, and both seem to be far too quiet when in the driver's cab. Both have strongly directionalised sounds that go from being a bit quiet when looking back at the machinery compartment to almost nothing when facing forwards. Is this other player's experience? Is there a fix or a patch please? Thanks for your help.
I'll check on that later. Depends where the cab sound emitter is placed, but first thing would be to check the cab occlusion blueprint. Do you have some blueprint editing experience? Try setting LFRatio to 0.01 and RoomRatio to 0.5, the values here are pretty high. You can also lower the Occlusion to -1200. Edit: Just playing "Paper Run" on Chatham Main Line. The values I mentioned are causing this nice metallic reverb sound in the cab, I'll keep them. What you are mentioning I do not experience though. I think triznya.andras mentioned some directional issues also - which I don't have. It might depend on your sound setup / driver. EFX enabled in TSC settings? Output correctly configured (Stereo / 5.1 ?)... I hear the sounds are directional but it's ok, not that they'd cut out when looking forward. In electric mode, it's very quiet but I don't know the real sound of that thing. But then, changing to the default values of 0.01 / 0.5 could help - maybe it's that reverb that your audio hardware / driver is processing differently on your system? Try if it sounds better using this little patch. (For both 73s from the BR Blue Pack and the Gatwick Express Class 73 Pack). Should be better. Fans when going through resistors are louder now.
The directional sound problem you mention can be caused by having audio enhancements on in Windows. When I turned them off it fixed it, so it's worth checking it.
I like running the MKS 73 - the DTG is a rehash of the IHH version and nowhere near as good. Sound wise the Class 73 sounds nice when accelerating on Electric - I don't have EFX enabled Apart from the compressor there is not much other sound when not taking power as they don't have Motor Blowers.. As you know you can go off the third rail on Diesel and also on Electric. The loco will run on Electric on any route because it still thinks its a diesel.
I'll be disabling this tonight thanks! Some of my AP66's but strangely not all have very directional sound, as said about, when looking forward there is virtually no in cab sounds!
I recommend you enable EFX, you're missing the fantastic tunnel reverb sounds otherwise. The difference is huge!
Folks, thanks for you help. I think I've tracked the problem down. I have a Soundblaster card installed, which I use with headphones. When I put the headphones into the mobo 5.1 sound, all is fine. If I put them into the Soundblaster, I get the problems described in the OP. However, if I configure the SB output to use Windows Sonic for Headphones, then all seems good, though I might be losing tunnel reverb. I'll do some more testing.
Might be that you're only getting the Front that way. 5.1 uses 3-4 outputs, Front, Rear, maybe center and Bass. For lolz you could try and plug your headphones (or another set) into the rear output and check whether the engine sound is there. My problem is similar, but not exactly. It is about how the (surround) sound is positioned to my Headphones, it is just extremely aggressive. That and some (station) ambience cuts out way too soon. Overall this thread sounds great, apparently with proper surround sound it should be jolly to play. Some headphones even support that.
Well that's just silly Peter, why would you not have it enabled as Spikee/Torf has already said.. I'll reiterate... Huge!
Good lord don't mention Dynamic lighting when Peters in earshot, are you trying to unleash the beast?
I'm not sure what happened, but starting an FL9 scenario (GWD243) now, it doesn't have its typical electric blower sound at all. It's just dead silent, also while rolling at 15mph. It does have track and traction sounds. Traction is louder when looking behind. Going to restart... wanted to say, but wasn't sure. But I ended up with my first ever vertex buffer error. So now I'm sure. Edit: Second run was fine. Either pausing or Alt-Tabbing killed it. Some scenarios have pausing messages so any such instability can cause issues.
