Good morning. I have run on most of the modern freight routes but your reviews of the Clinchfield convinced me to give it a try. One of the first things I noticed was the difference in the F7 brakes and controls. What are the basics of F7 braking? I noticed the automatic brake doesn't seem to change the gauge that shows percentage applied at the bottom of the hud. Thanks for the help.

Its a lap braking which is slightly different. In terms I understand you need to move the level to service (which applies) and then back to lap (which I understand stops any further application).

It's straight forward once you suss it out. You then have to release as normal or if you want to reduce pressure.

    Hope that helps.

If you have any UK route with the 101, those brakes are similar.

IIRC on American freight locos you cannot do a partial release, only full release then re-apply.

That is indeed true and the result of the vagaries of the triple valve. Here is a diagram from Trains Magazine that nicely sums up American air brakes:

It has been a while - too long! - since I enjoyed the F7, but IIRC, it has a minimum reduction and then uses apply and lap after that.
