seeing reports of lots of destruction on the Clinchfield RR CSX line thats in TSW and TSC saw that a bridge that carries the line over the river south of Erwin TN completely washed away it was in Chestoa area all along the Nolachucky river ..saw videos of people stranded on the roof of a hospital in Erwin TN someone said the Clinchfield main line runs behind it on a hillside ..between 8 inches up 27 inches of rain from Hurricane Tropical storm Helene .Saluda grade a TSC route also badly affected even though Ns no longer runs trains on it but soupposedly was planned for a hiking trail conversion ..i know this post may be more a off topic but it is a route in TSW TSC and more people will see it on the general discussion than off topic page..
A friend told me this morning that at least 40 miles of the Clinchfield CSX Blue Ridge Kingsport sub completely washed away plus several bridges washed away ..some are saying if the line may even recover or will take a long time to fix ..it remains to be seen what CSX will decide on the Clinchfields fate
It is a major news event here in US Helene was a category 4 hurricane 140 mph substained winds and higher gusts when it came ashore in the northern part of Florida then it went into South Georgia as cat 2 then weakend into a tropical storm then a depression but produced record heavy rain s in mountains of NC SC TN GA anywhere from 8 inches to 27 inches thats a lot of water and spells disaster ..been over 55 ppl killed and more missing either swept away in floods or buildings homes destroyed by winds tornadoes etc
The fact that it is a mountainous area where the Clinchfield, now CSX, runs, all that water on the mountainsides runs into the valleys where the track is alongside the river, The water has no place to spread out to and just causes the river level to rise drastically.
Here's a news story about the impact on the Clinchfield line: https://www.trains.com/trn/news-rev...-largely-unrecognizable-after-historic-flood/
Keep ignoring human induced climate change? Anyway it is too late already to reverse in our lifetime. In another thread I've read a silica mine was affected, the author presuming this would affect electronics pricing. Since most, if not all, consumer electronics comes from China, I'd assume the Chinese have their own sources of silica, either domestic or from their 'colonies' or little big friend Russia?
ive seen some thing there is something funky with that whole thing they not sending enough aid the ppl there are really hurting bad and they say there not enough money but they have plenty of money for other THINGS..ill leave it at that.
