Since the advent of TSC I find the consist builder is crashing when it gets to 16% I suspect, however, that it has something to do with the =warning about Workshop Items loading that keeps cropping up inexplicably.
I sent in a ticket to Dovetail but got a laundry list of things I have to do and check before they will look at it.
My machine is up to spec, I have done a clean install etc. Haven't verified the wotsits in Steam - next thing to do.

Personally I believe it is an issue with large installations. When I started out with TS I didn't have any issues but it progressively got slower until now it crashes every time. My installation is around 200GB and I believe TS is trying to load almost all of it into memory for the consist builder, which obviously doesn't work very well with 16GB of RAM. I can't prove this though unless I delete everything I've installed, so I'm not going to try. If anybody has a new installation though, it would be interesting to find out.

    Thanks Doomotron,
I really think you are right. Essentially we are penalized for buying stuff!
For the first MS Trainsim you could get a program that removed all the stock from the program folder and only put in what you wanted for boot up. IIRC it was called Train Shed? We need something like that!

The problem is you are trying to build a consist but the game does not know which items you wish to use - so it shows all of them.

In the past some people have separate Asset Folders will all the US stuff in one, the European stuff in another and the UK in a third. When they wanted to use say just the US Assets folder they renamed it to Assets and that is all the game would see.
It works ok for the rolling stock as you are unlikely to mix any of those.

That's a good idea actually. Maybe we could make a version of the TSW content loader for TS?

I hate to advertise, especially what I don't use, but RW Enhancer 2 seems to have an external consist builder.
I have trust that they managed to make it work ;)
TSC itself has a number of issues which I'm confident could be solved, but they don't. (Most famous is the workshop issue.)

The other option that I use, is to build my consist in the game world.
I usually create a new one from scratch, without AI. Alternatively, I start a Quick Drive, then go into the editor / build, search for quick drive there. Either way, the scenario can be edited and driven. Even Cloned, renamed (to keep it). The most minimal things I did were to set the consist to be loaded, but you can fix the path, add intermediate objectives, or in some cases remove conflicting AI (München to Augsburg) or fix times (am/pm, 14:00 quick drive blocked by a service starting 02:03, suspicious).
It's absolutely worth it to spend a (literal) couple hours fiddling with the editor, first I'd recommend (editing) a free roam and just placing trains, you can still set objectives even (all trains are AI until the player clicks them).

For large collections the built in editor is borderline useless, anyway. At 400 DLC, each bringing their own copies of the same wagons even, it's a major challenge to find what you want, unless you know the names. But realistically, as Peter described, it's hardly the case. Picking a few DLC to use assets from does suffice.

The RWE2 consist builder works really well, you'll just need to remember to tick the RW Enhancer folder as well as the rolling stocks parent folders in the scenario editor to use them.
