With the upcoming annual update in mind I would like to remember what would be a highly immersive feature for everyone using a controller: Vibration. There are many possibilities to add it, not all making much sense of course. I would suggest starting with a careful implementation by using it when going over switches / track joints. This should be not much of a problem to implement as the sounds already are triggered when going over such a spot. So it might be a good testing ground as well. If it works it could be expanded over time. What might be cool as well might be adding it to the horn of the big american diesels - I could imagine this could make the effect of the sound even cooler.
