Expansion Cornish Holiday Express: Plymouth To Newquay, St Austell, Parkandillack & Fowey Dock

This route proposal would cover a distance of around 75 miles and provide the player with a large variety of services to drive, from local services with 150s to summer additional services to Newquay with the HST and China Clay traffic from Fowey Dock, Parkandillack and Burngullow. ECS workings to Plymouth's famous Laira Depot as well as trip workings between Tavistock Jn Yard and Cattewater Sidings with the Class 08. The era for this route proposal would be a summer Saturday timetable in 2008, which would provide around 120 services for the player to drive.

Proposed Rolling Stock

• Class 08 in BR Blue livery

The largest fleet of BR diesel loco ever built (996 in total), the 08s work has been constantly reducing for around 40 years or so but one of the places they could still be seen at work was transporting wagons to and from the Bitumen Sidings at Plymouth Docks. This would require a reversal at Plymouth Friary as well as passing through Laira Depot to avoid having to run round in Plymouth Station. While these locos would only work 4 services on this route, it would give the player a change of pace compared to all the other workings in the timetable

• Class 150/2 in FGW 'Local Lines' livery

Back in 2008, these units could be found working local services to Penzance, Looe, Gunnislake, Exeter and Paignton as well as many other destinations, all of which are listed on the livery the class was in during this time period. In total, the 150 would add 60 services to the timetable for this route, which would all be drivable apart from Looe branch services which don't call at Coombe Junction Halt.

• Class 220 & 221 'Voyagers' in CrossCountry livery (NEW)

These fleets of 4 and 5car units have been the mainstay of the CrossCountry network for over 20 years now, and are now due in for refurbishment alongside a new livery. Whilst they would not provide the majority of the traffic along this route, this presents an ideal opportunity to get them into the game. These units contribute around 50 services to the timetable, of which 22 are drivable

• Class 43 'HST' in de-branded Midland Mainline 'Rio' and First Great Western 'Dynamic Lines' livery

The HST has been seen in Train Sim World before in GWR livery, but this DLC would feature 2 new liveries for the class in FGW and CrossCountry. The CrossCountry sets would feature on this route running out to Newquay as well as AI traffic at Plymouth.

At the start of the summer timetable (May 2008), not all of the required HST sets had been through their CrossCountry refresh, so many of the early weeks of reintroduction of HSTs to CrossCountry saw power cars and coaches still in the old Midland Mainline livery running, complete with their original Paxman Valenta engines. This provides a clear distinction between the 2 varieties of HST included with this route as well as getting the long requested Valenta HST variant into the game.

• Class 66 in EWS & Freightliner livery + PCA cement wagons & ICA-D & CDA China Clay wagons.

Unfortunately I've used up my screenshot count already so these will follow in a separate post, but the inclusion of yet another class 66 is cancelled out (in my opinion) by 2 new freight wagons. The ICA-D wagons would be used on services to the Cattewater Sidings (I'm not 100% sure I've identified these wagons correctly, so if anyone knows what was used on these workings irl that would be helpful) whilst the CDA would be used on all the China Clay workings on this route (10 workings in total). The PCA wagons and Freightliner Class 66 would find their use within this route on the Moorswater Cement workings (3 workings in total, one light engine).

Awesome idea in principle but scrap far to over recycled 66

 

The wagons used mainly on the China Clay is the JIA wagons in know that because it ran yesterday Saturday 12th July 2025 and it was hauled by a DB Class 66

 

Great Idea, very well thought out suggestion.

 

Though this might work better in the BR Classic era, particularly with diesel hydraulic locos and when Newquay was a substantial terminus, not just a dead end siding.

 

Great suggestion but really should also include the Falmouth branch.
