Thrash along the Cumbrian Coast in the iconic Class 37 locomotive in Train Sim World 2: The Cumbrian Coast Line. Take the controls of a Class 150 ‘Sprinter’ DMU or clag into stations with classic loco-hauled traction.

    History

By 1844, the Cumbrian coast line, built by a variety of different companies had been completed in its entirety with the addition of the Furness line. All operations were absorbed by the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, under the Grouping Act. Later on, under the watchful eye of British Rail, the line saw a variety of DMU and loco-hauled diagrams. The vast majority of services ran as a contained Carnforth - Carlisle service, although a few trains a day provided a through connection onto the West Coast Mainline. After privatisation, services were operated almost solely by Northern Trains and its various successors. Services were operated with Class 150 and 153 sprinters and Class 37 + Mk2 sets hired from DRS, particularly popular with enthusiasts. By 2019, all the loco-hauled sets had been withdrawn and the line is today operated by a rather bland selection of Class 153 and 156 DMUs.

    Stations and route length

The 45mi 70ch route features 17 stations, from north to south, at Whitehaven, Corkickle, St Bees, Nethertown, Braystones, Sellafield, Seascale, Drigg, Ravenglass for Eskdale, Bootle, Silecroft, Millom, Green Road, Foxfield, Kirkby-in-Furness, Askam and Barrow-in-Furness. Despite the high station count, I feel such a route is plausible. For reference, London Commuter (Brighton Mainline) featured over 50 route miles and 28 stations. A cab ride is available (filmed in 2015) from video125co and a more recent view out the window on the journey can be found here: . Various ‘head-out’ views are available online from the days of loco-hauled workings

    Rolling stock and service patterns

The route would be set in 2015, with the operator as Northern Trains (Serco - Abellio)

    Class 150/2 (Northern Trains)

    2Cxx Barrow-in-Furness - Carlisle (1tph)

2Cxx Lancaster - Carlisle (2tpd in each direction)

    5Cxx Barrow CS - Barrow-in-Furness (ECS)

Class 37 + Mk2 Rake (Direct Rail Services)

    2Cxx Barrow-in-Furness - Carlisle (4tpd in each direction)

    5Cxx Barrow CS - Barrow-in-Furness

The route also has potential for a Class 153 ‘Sprinter’ DLC in Northern Trains livery subbing in on the 2Cxx workings worked by Class 150s

NB: Loco hauled services in a push-pull manner, with a Class 37 locomotive, a short-form rake of Mk2e coaches and a Mk2f DBSO on the rear, all in DRS livery. Occasionally the DBSO was replaced with an additional Class 37 locomotive in a T&T formation. The DBSO is facing the ‘Lancaster end’ with the 37 at the ‘Carlisle end’

Services researched from the 2015-12 WTT, section CE05
