I was just wondering if there is any way to use locomotive power through an emu like they would do in real life when that route is not electrified.such as coupling a 4 vep to a class 73 and using the diesel power from that

It works if you pull with the diesel. Ideally you set the EMU as dead. I did pull a Class 158 with a Class 47 like that.
Not sure it works the other way around, maybe with the barest of simple old things, and of course a few scripted ones. Most cab cars I've driven so far have had their own dynamic brakes and RPM and all. Mechanically they have very low power, so the rear loco feels to push anyway.

Fun fact: You can set up a double decker MU using Köln-Koblenz DBpzfa coaches, it will run just fine as AI.

Like Peter suggested, just try it. If you are lucky, even in push mode it will work because the cab will have its majestic 1 horsepower but the power handle percentage will also apply to the locomotive and voila, push-pull train achieved.

There might be issues with the cab car (DVT) thinking there is no electricity, though. Like the NJCL cab cars have dual mode, but the M8 only has two electric modes.
