Since it's not possible to remove the sometimes quite annoying stopping types which only register the player train as stopped when you tend to overshoot them I was wondering if it would at least be possible to mark them somehow differently in the HUD so that you at least know which kind of stopping marker you're approaching?

It happened countless times to me that I had to crawl my way along the platform or siding to a most of the time unrealistic stopping position just to make the game accept the stop... while you sometimes get used to it (e.g. Meissen branch on DRA, Northfleet station (?) on SEHS) it on the other hand hits you quite unexpected, so it would be nice to see it beforehand in order to alter your approach to a more overshooting style and prevent you from stopping multiple times every few meters on a single station / siding. ;)

I was wondering if there would be a way to display it in the HUD - as has been previously with the 'Go via' symbol, maybe some altered stopping symbol which indicates 'drive at least to this spot'?

The current stopping system bugs me too, quite a bit actually.
On passenger services, you often have to stop in unrealistic places, i.e. at the end of a 350m long platform with my 70m long DMU, while the only access to the platform is at the other end... poor passengers. And many times the mark has to be hit with 10m of accuracy, which can be unnerving when you bring your 1200t freight train to a halt 11m before the mark, just to make sure you don't overrun the evil red signal which is sitting 5 to 6m behind the mark

For passenger services, some kind of platform detection system would be nice. For example:
-Each door is accessible from the platform = good stop
-Some doors are accessible from the platform = average stop
-All doors have passed the platform = stop failed
Bonus points could be awarded if the train is stopped close to the ingress points of the platform, i.e. where most of the passengers would usually wait. But that's too hard to script considering the sheer diversity of stations, I guess.

Freight is a bit more tricky, since there are usually no platforms to "measure" the stopping area with. Perhaps increasing the tolerance from 10 to 15 meters would already help a lot.

For UK passenger trains (unsure about other countries) each platform has a stop marker depending on the number of coaches. This is replicated in TSW for the most part (although there are some areas, such as Chatham on SEHS, where trains don't do this).

On some German routes, there are stop marker signs too, usually a bunch for various train lengths. But not on all of them, by far. With some route experience and knowledge of how long my train is, I usually do well, even without any marker signs.
But sometimes the game demands me to stop at a completely idiotic and unrealistic position. Of the routes I regularly serve on, this is especially noticeable in München-Augsburg, Rosenheim-Salzburg and parts of the Rheinstrecke.
