So there have been suggestions before, to add functionality to the door release button in the cab, so that the passengers open the doors rather than all open up at the same time through the driver command.
Along those lines, it would be nice if the door buttons for the passengers would be set to work properly. Instead of just clicking anywhere on the door, it should be that you need to click the open-door button like you would do in real life. And then the doors would close automatically after a couple of seconds of no one going in or out. In addition, some trains have a specific close-door button, so that could also be made functional.

TLDR: Opening and closing a passenger door should work through the corresponding buttons on the door, once enabled by the driver, and not by clicking basically anywhere on the door.

Yes that would be great, some more realism would be really good, but I would much more love to see train announcements, because these shouldn't be difficult

I would love to see this, but unfortunately there are many different door control systems around. In Germany, there are four different systems:

    TB0 (Türblockierung ab 0km/h):
Central locking for the whole train. When stopping at the station the driver unlocks all doors on the train. They are closed by the guard or the driver but they have to check by sight if all doors are closed correctly. TB0 is barely used anymore.
    SSTF (seitenselektive Türsteuerung Fernferkehr):
Side Locking for long-distance trains. Similar to TB0 but the driver can choose to only unlock one side of the train. The departure procedure is the same as with TB0. SSTF can be found on all ICs, ICEs, as well as the ex-Metropolitan rolling stock.
    SAT (Selbstabfertigung Triebfahrzeugführer):
Self-departure by the driver. Similar to SSTF this system can be used without a guard. In addition to SSTF this system provides a control lamp to ensure all doors have been closed correctly. The closing procedure itself must still be overseen by sight. Older regional trains still use this system.
    TAV (Technikbasiertes Abfertigungsverfahren):
Automated departure procedure. The driver unlocks the doors on one side. The door closes automatically after a given time and checks that nothing is trapped in between. The driver then locks the doors (might have to wait for all doors to close) and departs without the need to check them by himself. If the doors don't close by themself he can still close them manually as with SAT.
TAV can be found in most rolling stock.

This would also give the opportunity to fix the door controls in the BR146 and Dostos. The side selector switch is flipped 180° and at the moment you close the doors with the manual close command. Normally you would just put the side selector to the closed position and wait for the doors to lock.

That would be lovely if it could be implemented that accurately. I didn't even dare to dream that far, I had more a UI update in mind. But having this full functionality in game would be even better, I totally agree, thanks for providing this nice overview!
