Playing Spirit of Steam and I managed to couple another Stanier class to the end of my carriages, trouble is the second locomotive wasn't contributing to the forward acceleration. I had to sneak my way in, using the external cameras to control the throttle and breaking while in movement. My question is, is there a way to control both engines with the same controls - or at least a way to control the second engine but with keyboard binds as opposed to using the external cameras?
I don't think so cuz only American freight trains have such feature. In American freight trains, there is banking comm which no other trains have.
and the ZDS, ZWS, ZMS, DR120 and various other German multiple loco control systems? which are modeled and work on the BR101. But as for a steam engine... whilst there were methods to drive the train from the other end of a set of carriages.... GWR Auto coaches did it by using steam motors to adjust the regulator and valve cut off remotely, or rods and cables with lots of joints and linkages, brakes are easy, admit air to the system anywhere to apply them, so a brake valve in the driving end of the coach was the simple bit... and the fireman on the loco would take care of working the ejectors to re-create the vacuum (GWR loco's usually had a mechanical vacuum pump too) But when banking / being assisted from behind, you'd have a set of whistle codes to tell the driver on the banking engine when to apply power etc, it would be nice if this could be modeled in TSW2, but it'd need the banking engine to run with the simugraph system (would likely tip the older consoles over as they can barely run the game as it is) Without the assisting loco using simugraph, it'd act like an AI loco, thus be able to accelerate at rocket speed and brake to a stop from 100mph in about 10 yards. but TBH we can't even get an AI guard to blow a whistle / give 2 buzzes to tell you the trains ready to depart, so something as complex as whistle codes for controlling another engine is probably too much for the game,
On tsc if you couple a steam engine to a 375 the controls are linked. So yea it is possible unrealistically. If you want more speed the 8f seems to be supercharged! There's a mod available to add it to passenger service runs.
There is a difference to having two or more engines lashed together as a Multiple Unit (in most cases there is a hardwired control circuit), and having one or more engines at the other end of the train, which can only be controlled either by radio link,. or have their own crew.
For the br diesels, all blue star equipped locomotives are compatible. Class 20, 31, 37 & 40. Not the tsw 47. The class 33 works technically, but the jumper cables are missing. Towing is possible with every loco, you can use an mk1 if you need to rescue a hst if no cl.66 is available. Even towing a class 66 with a german electric Unit is possible. For steam, a tandem working would be needed, not sure if its modeled, since i only tested towing of 7 8f into the scrapyard.
