Hi,im new to the forum so I dont know if this is posted in the correct thread, appologies if its not. I want to have a go at TSW5 on series x, some of the DLC packs say you need another pack to utilise the content.eg the Class 20 requires the Tees Valley Line, as a separate purchase, in order to utilise this content.Does that mean the expansion pack wont work at all without the other pack or just not all of the routes? I dont know if ive misunderstood but didnt want to buy a pack just to have to buy another one to make it work. Hope you can help Andy
Up until TSW3 released, loco packs required the route they were designed for to work because of the silly way that the DLC was developed. Therefore if the loco DLC was released before TSW3 you will need to make sure the route is both owned and installed for the loco pack to work. From TSW3 onwards loco packs were separated from routes and could be used separately, although obviously you couldn't play the scenarios included. I believe at the time DTG said they would work through older loco packs to remove their route requirements but to my knowledge this never happened.
Each dlc will play fine without them. What they add is extra a.i. layers, so you see extra traffic. And also add extra services you can play through the timetable. Look at what you like to run ; freight, commuter, express. Example: Commuter LIRR V2 you can add the M3 which appears as extra traffic on the route and also you can play it in the timetable.
Ok,I sort of understand.lol. So I can buy the Class 20 dlc and use it without having to shell out for the Tees Valley pack? Does this also work for all the packs? Sorry for so many questions but the whole Train sim thing is new to me.
To make it more clear: The reason why loco pcks from TSW3 on function WITHOUT a particular route is that DTG decided to bring in the „Training Center“- a route, developed for the exact purpose of loco DLCs and other trains to have their tutorials on that route. This training center came with TSW3 and the following titles. So as the others said above: You will need the route that is desicated to the loco DLC if it is older than TSW3. Small tip: on the thumbnail of the DLC you can see with which TSW it released. If it says TSW 3/4/5, it’s working without a dedicated route, if it says TSW, TSW2, TSW ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP (you get the point) it needs a route.
OK, here we go again. If somebody wants to give my head a wobble please feel free.lol.Ive read through the various replies and your help is much appreciated but....... I want to buy Heavy freight pack to go with my TSW5 game, the version says Train Sim World 5 on the thumbnail and release date this month, but in the description it says i need the NorthernTrans Pennine pack.Is this case? I meant to add im playing on series X if it makes any difference, sorry to keep asking the same thing over but im slightly confused.
The Heavy Freight Pack was released as a DLC for the Northern Transpennine route from TSW2 (or TSW2020 can't remember, it's one of them anyway). Both are needed. Just a note: the reason it says TSW5 is because that is the TSW5 version of the route, it doesn't necessarily mean the route was released for TSW5.
yeah, I made a small mistake here- sorry! You actually have to look out: If the pack is available BEFORE TSW3 was released, it needs a route. I think for every new TSW title the DLCS were published again. So if you want to buy a loco DLC you have to check whether it’s available for a TSW title before TSW3. If that’s the case, it needs a route.
If a DLC requires Tees Valley or Northern Trans Pennine and you like the older UK period these are very good routes which have been enhanced by the modders to make them as good as any TSW route. They will come up on sale before long and as long as they are to your taste you will not regret the purchase. If you are new to modding, it is not complicated and help is available on here. The mod site is - https://www.trainsimcommunity.com/mods/c3-train-sim-world and really worth a look if you want to get the best out of TSW.
I would like to applaud emanym10 for doing much more research than should be expected of a customer before buying a product. We do see instances where people buy a loco DLC under the perfectly logical assumption that they should be able to use the loco without buying something else, only to find out afterwards that they needed to spend another £24.99 on another route to activate it. Given that some locos do follow this logical assumption and others don't, it can get very confusing for a new customer.
Confusing or not, common sense dictates to look at the description of what you are buying, which would tell you everything about it.
It was a tad cofusing, hence the 20 questions, but I think I understand how it all works now. jack#9468 Fair comment,I wondered why you needed one DLC to run another DLC pack,it tells you what you need but not why.I was curious, I like to do a bit of research first.
It does, doesn't it? I still feel like it could be clearer somehow, especially since, at least on Steam, the required content section doesn't actually state a route requirement. It is only mentioned in rather small print at the end.
If you enjoy BR-era diesels, both routes are very enjoyable even without mods, and come with some good rolling stock. They tend to be discounted quite deeply on sale as they are older, so it's worth waiting. I would personally rate TVL as the better route, especially if you get the 20 and 31 to go with it, but NTP is a solid effort, especially with the heavy freight pack.
To help out, below are all the loco packs that require routes to work: CSX GP40-2 (no longer available) - Sand Patch Grade Class 33 - West Somerset Railway DB BR182 - Rapid Transit DB BR155 - Ruhr Sieg Nord Class 52 - West Somerset Railway BR Heavy Freight Pack - Northern Transpennine Amtrak SW1000R / Metroliner cab car (no longer available) - NEC New York Class 31 - Tees Valley Line MP36PH-3C Baby Bullet - Peninsula Corridor MP15DC - Peninsula Corridor DB BR204 - Main Spessart Bahn LIRR M3 - Long Island Railroad Class 20 - Tees Valley Line DB BR363 - Ruhr Sieg Nord CSX C40-8W - Sand Patch Grade Diesel Legends of the Great Westerm - Great Western Express Original DB BR101 - Hauptstrecke Rhein-Ruhr 1938 Stock - Bakerloo Line DB BR187 - Koln Aachen Class 313 - East Coastway Vossloh G6 - Rhein-Ruhr Osten RHB Anniversary Collection - Arosa Linie New Journeys CSX SD40 - Sand Patch Grade New Journeys Brushed Aluminium 1972 Stock - Bakerloo Line New Journeys DB BR423 - Koln Aachen The Class 465 pack has been excluded as it has been included with Southeastern Highspeed by default since TSW3. In TSW2 it requires Southeastern Highspeed separately. It is also worth noting that loco packs released after TSW3 may have certain functionality locked behind routes despite not requiring them. I can't think of any example off the top of my head, but a loco pack may be able to substitute into route A but require its intended route (B) for the layer to work. This should be a rare scenario however.
Funnily enough, it tells you TSW5 (3, 4 etc) is needed to utilise the content. Makes me wonder why actual route it depends on is hidden at the bottom. Reminds me of when I'm reading the terms and conditions of something and the most important stuff is in miniscule text at the bottom
Really it should be at the top. I'm sure it's possible to set up a warning message at the top that's a bit more visible, but perhaps not. It is amusing having the TSW game in that warning box since it isn't exactly true, as I can buy the TSW5 version of a DLC and play it on TSW2 without issue because of the way the DLC is set up.
