There is no realistic simulation of Finnish railway traffic. TSW would be a perfect simulator for Finnish train simulation. In this post I will give a short presentation of Finnish rolling stock. The gauge of Finnish railways is 1524mm, which is a bit wider than the standard gauge. Let's get started. The current rolling stock of Finnish railways is: VR SR1 The SR1 is the oldest electric locomotive of VR (Finland's state-owned railway operator). It's built in Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory in Soviet Union between 1973-1996. It is used on passenger and freight services around the Finland. Maximum speed is 140km/h. These locos will be replaced in near future with SR3 locos. (see below) VR SR2 The SR2 is a Finnish variant of Swiss RE460 loco. It's the most common loco in passenger services, used mainly on Intercity and freight services. Maximum speed is 210 km/h, but it's limited to 200 km/h on services. VR SR3 The SR3, which is a member of Siemens Vectron family, is the newest electric loco of VR. It will replace the SR1 locos in near future.
The diesel locos of VR are: VR DV12 The DV12 is the oldest loco of VR. There are three variants of this loco, which have small differences. This loco is mainly used on freight trains and shunting. The maximum speed is 125 km/h on passenger services and 80km/h on freight services. VR DR16 The DR16 is a heavy diesel-electric loco, which is used on night train services between Kemi and Kolari in Lapland, and on heavy Russian freight trains in Eastern Finland. Maximum speed is 140 km/h. VR DR14 The DR14 is a heavy shunting locomotive of VR, which is mainly used in large railyards. Maximum speed is 75 km/h.
The EMUs of VR are: VR SM3 The SM3, which is a member of Pendolino family, is the fastest train of VR. It is used on Pendolino services around the Finland. It consist of 6 coaches. Maximum speed is 220 km/h, but the only line where it's allowed to reach this speed is Kerava-Lahti line. This train has faced many technical issues, when it was introduced. It didn't work well in winter. The couplers were also changed, because the old couplers had problems. VR SM4 The SM4 is used on fast commuter and regional train services in Southern Finland. Maximum speed is 160 km/h. VR SM5 The SM5 is used on Helsinki area commuter rail network, which is a bit similar to German S-Bahn. It is a member of stadler FLIRT family. Maximum speed is 160 km/h, but these lines that they are running are limited to 120 km/h. There are two liveries for this train.
VR SM2 The SM2 is the oldest EMU of VR, which is in use. They are used only on rush hour fast commuter services with SM4 trains. Maximum speed is 120 km/h. These trains were used on Helsinki area commuter rail network and fast commuter train services with SM1 trains, which are now removed, but SM5 trains replaced them. VR has announced new modern EMUs that will replace SM2 trains.
The DMUs of VR are VR DM12 The DM12 railcar is used on many regional train services on unelectrified lines. It replaced loco hauled regional trains. Maximum speed is 120 km/h.
Fascinating! This would be a nice addition to TSW2. It seems that Scandinavia has often been left out, even in the Train Simulator series of games! So this would also be a welcoming addition.
just so you know Scandinavia is Sweden,Norway and Denmark Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark are a part of the Nordic
Would really like some Finnish routes and trains in TSW2. By the way, in Norway we have the EL18 locomotive which is a sister of the VR Sr2 and Re 460 locomotives and it's mounted with snow plow. It has the motor of the Re 465 locomotive.
Yes I do know this, I am Half Danish My apologies. I misspoke haha. I would love to see some Nordic (Finland) and Scandinavian routes. Haha
I'd love to see Dv12 locomotive in TSW2. At the moment it's the most prominent shunter and freighter with almost 200 of them produced. But as they are to be withdrawn in the coming years, it would be nice to have them featured in the game as a tribute for their 60 years of service... Understanding Finland is a nieche market and thinking the business side of adding a finnish route, finnish and german rolling stock has a lot of similarities, so it is possible DTG could recycle some 3D assets form the german locos and cars to save production costs. I don't have a strong opinnion for a route, there are other finnish fans here that have better knowledge of routes. But some place where there would be Dv12 shunting and freight runs with electric trains doing passanger services. Or if we made a history route (pre 2014) it would be possible to feature Dv12 with blue coaches for passanger as well. I might do a new thread about the fabulous Dv12. But feel like, as I'm not affiliated with the VR in any way other than ocassional passanger and a general rail fan, I might not be able to provide answers for any detailing questions at the time. Here's the wiki article on Dv12: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VR_Class_Dv12 And in greather detail in finnish: https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dv12
Having some Finnish content would bring some value to the "world" part of train sim WORLD, fascinating stock.
You're missing the SM6 which has Finland JKT ETCS 25kv 50hz Russia former soviet union 25kv 50hz 3kv DC ASLN Klub-U. Regarding the locomotives all are equipped with SA-3 couplers if moved a hook we going to should be familiar with that type of operation Great Western Mainline class 66 AAR coupler switch to buffers and chains
There's also the private freight operators with their stock, like Fenniarail's Dr18 and Oprail's Dr20
Thanks for telling me about this and if you are wondering SM6 is owned by Karelian Trains VR Finland with Russian RZD joint venture. Here's the Website for Allegro from VR Finland Railway which means DTG can possibly get the Allegro SM6 from VR Group AB Swedish Name VR Group OY unless they also get RZD License. My question is this should the first route in Finland be Helsinki Vyborg or not? If chosen you drop the Vectron Sr3 locomotive at Vyborg where a Russian EP20 25kv 50hz 3kv DC ASLN Klub-U locomotive picks up the train. Reverse is EP20 drop train then you run Vr3 Vectron to Helsinki station Helsingfors in Swedish.
