Train Sim World 5’s first Add-on is soon to arrive and we’re aiming to hit this one out of the park! Get ready to catch MBTA Commuter: Boston – Framingham/Worcester on 12th November. It was originally scheduled to be 29th October, but we've needed to delay the release. You can read more on that here.

Free Starter Pack – Offer Extended!

If you missed our October Roadmap, we’ve announced an extension for the Train Sim World 5: Free Starter Pack on all platforms.

This means if you’re still playing an older version of TSW, you can update to the latest core game for free and unlock the ability to purchase new TSW5 Add-ons, like MBTA Commuter!

The offer will now end in early 2025. We’ll communicate a specific end date at a later time.

    Train Sim World Add-ons
    Continue Your Journey
    [IMG]

If you’re new to Train Sim World 5, this may well be the first Add-on that you decide to add to your collection. Adding extra route and locomotive Add-ons gives you more routes to explore and more trains to operate. In some cases, they can also bring more services and gameplay to routes already in your collection.

You can see just some of our 100+ Add-ons on our website!

Or if you’re playing on Steam, you can view the entire Add-ons list from the Steam Store Page!.

For more information on downloading Add-ons for your chosen platform, head over to our FAQs.

    MBTA Commuter
    [IMG]

The first Add-on for Train Sim World 5 will take players to the east coast of the USA and the culturally rich city of Boston, MA! Below we’ll cover the locomotives, the route and the gameplay elements you can look forward to upon release.

    The Locomotives

    MBTA HSP46 Diesel Locomotive
    [IMG]

New to Train Sim World is the sleek, modern HSP46 Diesel locomotive which is unique to the MBTA fleet. Having first entered service in 2014, the HSP46 has been increasingly used on services out of South Station, replacing the older F40PH.

Its large windows and curved nose not only make for a more aerodynamic journey, but an easier one for engineers, with a spacious cab layout that has more in common visually with some of the German locomotives in Train Sim World, than the American ones. This includes an interactive digital display, which players can zoom in on to interact with easier as part of Train Sim World 5’s core feature update.

Powering the unit is a GE GEVO-12 powerplant that meets more stringent emissions targets for use in urban environments, as well as a smoother sound when powering up to depart stations. There is also an Automatic Stop/Start feature, which temporarily shuts down the engine after 3 minutes with the Throttle in Idle and Reverser in Neutral. The engine restarts when those and several other controls are interacted with.

Safety Systems ATC and ACSES are both available to use as per other American locomotives but in-game these are not enabled by default.

All of this is packaged up in a refreshed livery that was voted for by the public, still displaying the bright purple colors of its commuter rail brand.

Audio for the HSP46 was recorded during a dedicated research trip to Boston. You can view photos of the team at work in the October Roadmap.

    MBTA F40PH-3C Diesel Locomotive
    [IMG]

Players will also be able to take up the familiar helm of the F40PH-3C first seen in Northeast Corridor: Boston – Providence. These iconic locomotives, seen in other F40PH variants across the United States, still work a large proportion of services out of both North and South Stations in Boston, including the Framingham/Worcester Line.

The cab may feel more familiar to players of other American Train Sim World routes and locomotives, with ACSES and ATC display top-right of the engineer’s position along with throttle, reverser and braking handles set up similar to how they are in older freight or switching locomotives. The F40PH’s safety systems have been updated for MBTA Commuter.

You can read more about the extensive history of the real-world F40PH locomotive in the We Are Railfans article: A Masterpiece in Many Colours.

The MBTA F40PH-3C diesel locomotive is included in the MBTA Commuter route Add-on. Players do not need to own previously released content to access this train.

    BTC & CTC Coaches (Bi-level & Single-level)

Two different styles of coaches will feature in the consists of trains heading along the Framingham/Worcester Line.

BTC & CTC bi-level cars are new to the route, representing stock seen across many of the MBTA Commuter Rail lines. Though visually these may be similar to those seen on San Bernardino Line, unlike those they have the cab car available to operate to facilitate return journeys from Worcester or Framingham, back to Boston.

Like the HSP46, these cab cars also have an interactive digital display screen and the passenger areas will have operable door controls for use in Train Sim World 5’s new Conductor Mode!

Conductor Mode will see you play the role of an MBTA Conductor, checking passenger tickets, clearing the aisles of baggage and operating door controls to ensure passengers alight and board safely.

Also included are the BTC & CTC single-level cars previously seen in Northeast Corridor: Boston – Providence. These will also have Conductor Mode functionality in MBTA Commuter and have had the safety systems updated to match those found in the HSP46 and bi-level cab car.

A selection of services will contain mixed sets of single- and bi-level coaches, with the majority of trains formed of uniformed sets. You will of course be able to create your own consists of locomotive and coaches in Formation Designer!

Both bi-level and single-level stock is included in the MBTA Commuter route Add-on. Players do not need to own previously released content to access these cars.

The Route: Boston South Station – Worcester, MA
    [IMG]

Train Sim World is back in Boston! This northeast, New England city plays host to plenty of commuter and long-distance railroad traffic from two large stations: Boston North and Boston South. This route Add-on features services running out of Boston South.

From here, services head off in a variety of directions serving wider towns and cities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as well as heading over the border to Providence, Rhode Island along the iconic high-speed Northeast Corridor, which is covered in the previously released Boston – Providence route Add-on.

Players that own the previous Boston route will be able to use Train Sim World 5's new Route Hopping feature to switch between this and MBTA Commuter at Boston South Station.

Framingham/Worcester Services share this route for a small part of the journey, running alongside I90, through the cosmopolitan Back Bay area to Back Bay Station, before splitting off and heading to the second stop at Lansdowne. It’s here where commuter rail baseball fans alight to head to Fenway Park, the USA’s oldest baseball stadium, to see the Red Sox do their thing as they have done there since 1912.

It’s then all west to Worcester (pronounced: ‘Wooster’), saying goodbye to the city center beyond Boston Landing and heading through a collection of smaller settlements and communities at Natwick, Ashland, Westborough and Grafton. Roughly halfway along is the City of Framingham, where some services terminate before heading back to Boston. For a long time, this settlement was the largest town in the state, before becoming a city in 2018.

At the western end of the line, the impressive Worcester Union Station greets passengers alighting at the second largest city in Massachusetts. Here engineers climb out of the cab of their locomotives and head down to the cab car of their train to make the home run back to Boston. A small yard also stables passenger trains whilst not in use.

    Timetable, Service Layers and Gameplay
    [IMG]

Like the previously released Boston – Providence route Add-on, MBTA Commuter is set in 2019 so that content from both route Add-ons can interact with one another.

Loco-hauled services will face out of Boston toward Worcester, with cab cars leading the way for the return journey back to Boston.

We’ll go into more details on the timetable courtesy of Joe in a future Dovetail Live article, prior to release, so stay tuned!

    Scenarios
There are 5 Scenarios in MBTA Commuter, which feature:
    • An extra revenue service from Boston South to Framingham to pick up fans after a baseball game.
    • Starting up a service to take passengers to the Boston Marathon
    • Taking a doubled-up revenue service to Boston before splitting the train in the yard
    • Run a reverse set (where the loco is facing towards Boston South) through a snow storm
    • Yard work in Southampton Street Yard
There’ll also be those Collectibles to hunt down! Standard route maps, warning signs and posters are out there to find, along with something baseball-themed.

Finding it tricky to get to all the locations during your session? You can of course cheat (sort of) by using Train Sim World 5’s new Fast Travel feature to immediately go back to locations where you may have missed a collectible.

    Mastery Challenges
    [IMG]

Mastery Challenges require you to perform certain tasks on a route, like completing certain Scenarios or travelling a certain number of miles in a specific locomotive. Tier 1 Challenges unlock Decals for use in Livery Designer. Tier 2 Challenges unlock toggleable Scenery Tiles.

For MBTA Commuter, the Scenery Tile will place a static, non-operable Red Line train to represent the ‘T’ trains that also form part of Boston’s real-world mass transit network.

Keen to start completing challenges before MBTA Commuter is released? If you’re already playing Train Sim World 5, we have a selection of October Mastery Challenges live which unlock badge decals upon completion!

You can find out more in our October Mastery article.

Very nice! This is the kind of scenery tile I love to see!

Other than that the screenshots look good. Hopefully scenery will be better than on Boston Sprinter, which had unfinished stations and misplaced stop markers.

One thing I noticed - there are some weird lines in the shading of the small triangle panel above the windshields of the HSP46 on several pictures. Issues with the model?

Anyways, looking forward to this one! Hopefully it will be good.

No, I mean just above it, the lines visible around the top right corner of your red rectangle. You can see the shading changing in clearly visible lines instead of gradually.

One for the stream Q&A really, but will the route and scenarios have any Fallout 4 references...

"I'll mark it on the 2D Map for you".

Or get the guy who does the voice for Nick Valentine to do any narration!

Oh, it seems that some settlement urgently needs help)
P.S. But seriously, the route should be very good - judging by the maps, the environment there is unusual is unusual (damn, I remembered Fallout 4 again)

This was such a lovely reading to know more about this route and its features and locomotives. I am BEYOND excited for this route to come out. As mentioned before, as one that comes from the area of Worcester, has taken the train a lot of times and have been obsessed with MBTA over the years at a young age back in the days, I am truly looking forward to this. The details of the Double-Deckers and the locos in this reading...spot on! I truly can't wait for this and to also see the previews and I also can't wait to see how the other stations would look like, especially Worcester. Honestly again, great job Dovetail! Looking forward to this. :)

Although I can’t wait for this route, I do have 1 question. What’s with the Ballast?
    Going off of this screenshot:[IMG]
You can see it doesn’t match the ground texture and you can really see the repetitiveness in the texture.
Going off of this screenshot I took on Boston Sprinter(sorry it’s hard to see):[IMG]
You can see there’s much less of a color difference between the ground and the Ballast? Keep in mind these routes take places pretty much in the same place.

I am excited for this release, but have a couple notes/observations...

I think it would be appropriate to be able to route hop from Back Bay as well, since that is a regular stop for both Amtrak and the T.

I like that static Red Line trains are being added to Cabot Yard, but disagree with them being added through a Mastery unlock.

It would also be nice if the Orange Line and Green Line trains could be added as AI traffic, like what was done for Edinburgh-Glasgow with the tram network on that route. The Orange Line in particular shares the route for a bit, and the Green Line is visible from a few spots. They wouldn't need to be detailed models, just something to add a flash of color and life.

I hope the two MP36's, 010 & 011, eventually make an appearance. We've got a great model of it already in-game, it'd be awesome to have a little more operational variety.

Fingers crossed for the unique GP40's at some point down the road!

I'm curious to see how freight figures into the timetable and AI traffic. While Beacon Yard is a shell of its former self, Framingham and Worcester are both active freight locations on the B&A. I'm also curious to see the Amtrak layers once you get back onto the NEC and into the South Station area. I'd also like to see the new rolling stock layer backwards onto the original route (although I think I read somewhere that the new content would/could not be layered in).

I'd like to see some fun, Easter Egg'ish, timetable scenarios involving night time hospital drags of mixed equipment to/from the Grand Junction Branch and Southampton Yard. They'd be short runs, especially without the full branch, but still fun and a change up from the usual commuter activity. Another fun run could be taking a CSX AC4400CW with a string of Amfleets between Worcester and South Station (or visa versa) to simulate the Lake Shore with subbed-in rescue power. The latter would be fantasy adjacent, but could help fill the void of us not having the proper equipment to accurately portray 448/449.

I look forward to seeing what gets released in a few weeks!

Hopefully the ADU in the CTC-3 cabcar has finally been fixed. And by that I also mean the old CTC-3 cabcar from Boston-Providence,

You're right! I was also looking up pictures of the locomotive but most of them were pretty dirty so I couldn't see the same effect. But judging by this photo it seems to be right. Nice detail!

I also agree with the others that the ballast seems to be a bit too black. Shouldn't it be a bit more brownish?

Ballast looks pretty bad on this shot as well. The repetitiveness is way too noticeable and why is it so black?

Also, the lighting is really off on this one. Why are the bilevel cars shining? lol
The lighting has always been funky on Boston Sprinter as well, so I wonder what will the situation be here.

I fear Dovetail have re-used the ballast from LIRR as they look identical but they just darkened the color of it. They both have the crappy repetitive texture and look dated. (credit to TrainSpotter from Tauranga, I’m not home so I couldn’t take a picture)

That's an old photo, roughly the mid 90's. South Station has seen a lot of development since then, and DTG's rendition is fine.

Here's a photo I took from a trip in 2020, closer to the timeframe of the upcoming route. My wife and I take the Acela to Boston about once a year, and I can confirm that DTG nailed the look and vibe of BOS more than NYP.

    No worries, it happens.

As far as the vibe goes, DTG did a fair job. That part of Boston is right along the harbor and not really the city center. Quincy Market and the Boston Aquarium are only a few blocks north of South Station, and the area is mostly private marinas and only a handful of taller skyscrapers. The architecture is a mix of old and new, with short colonial buildings mixed in with taller modern ones. It's not your typical "city" vibe, and is a lot more laid back in that area. Even the area around Fenway Park doesn't give off metropolis vibes, and once you head west on the I90/Mass Pike out of town you very quickly end up in the suburbs and cow country. If you're expecting a NYC or LA vibe, Boston IRL does not have it.

Here's some more photos I took from around where we stay in the South Station area, along with some from around Fenway.

I'm just hoping Fenway Park is modeled decently.

Auto Club Speedway wasn't too bad (Aside from the incorrect direction of the mastery) so maybe DTG can keep it up for Fenway as well.

After the poor showing of TSW 5 at release and before they have fixed or at least attempted to fix the core product with performance enhancements, they are pushing the next money spinner on us.

Shame on you DTG, you could have at least offered a discount.

Am I the only one who feels like the fall foliage is really washed out? For an area that is rather famous for vibrant colourful leaves at that time of the year, this looks really faded.

You can't fallout with me for any puns I might make during the preview stream, I'm a huge fan of the IP!

"I'll mark it on the 2D Map for you".

If you are on a PS5 the 2D map will probably freeze the game.

Looking at this shot from the trailer: IMG_7047.jpeg I can definitely see where you’re coming from, the whole lighting in this scene just looks way to off, from the locomotive itself to the ballast and trees. Hopefully this is just beta-build and these get fixed before release. But I doubt it..

I feel like I’ve seen a few routes that genuinely look like they would be released on TSW 2. The worst being Maintalbain, FifeCircle & WCML.

Why does the foliage look so bad, the ballast & certain textures just look…old.

Look at the way the ballast is, the way it’s just a texture that’s been cleanly cut & put down looks terrible.

Its been bad since tsw 3 or 4 the sunlight is set too bright makes the world look too washed out overexposed ...when playing tsw i set to light clouds and set cloud level slider up then it helps make it look better

It's insane that the sunlight intensity is probably a slider or a couple of values they need to fix, and we now have a third iteration of this...

Just to make everyone aware, I am keeping an eye on and tracking feedback in this thread. Without going into the route properly, I haven't been able to check on things myself (which I always do before a preview to familiarise myself with it). Just a reminder that we do have the Preview Stream on 22nd which will show the route off significantly more, as well as more info on timetables still to come.

To be fair I think it’s mostly a bigger question in general. There seems to be inconsistency in texture & asset quality.

It would be nice to get some discussion going with DTG as to why we see these inconsistencies. Without going into good or bad, why is it that that newer routes look to use older modelling methods, compared with recent counterparts? Fife Circle vs Cathcart. WCML vs SEHS or Goblin Line as examples.

Going into lighting the over contrast really hurts a lot of routes.

I get it’s kinda off topic, but at the same time this route seems to be subjected to the above.

Is freight included? If yes, is there a possibility to get an CSX SD40 or ES44? I mean: It should be about the same amount of work as the Br114 to rebuild the SD40 or ES44 to a CSX version from the BNSF version; and it would be so nice to finally have some TOD4 CSX locos finally :D

    We already have an SD40-2?
    20180912165111_1.jpg

And no we arn't getting anything new. Everything will layer into from SPG. Only good news is it seems like Joe had alot of help from the locals about CSX freight in the area from what I gathered in conversations on the TSC discord.

Will the Lake Shore Limited be layered and playable since it stops at Worchester, Framingham, Back Bay, and of course Boston South
