Hello everyone, I'm new to TSC and like it a lot. However, I have flickering foliage when on the move (in static it seems alright if not observed through the windshield of a train) that bugs me. Is there a know solution to get rid of it?
My PC isn't bad (4080gpu, 13700cpu), so I think I can install additional software if needed

It's to do with anisotropic filtering.

In the graphics settings you can set fxaa or msaa. One will reduce flicker on foliage and the other reduces flicker on ole etc. or enable both but with a big hit on performance.

I must have spent a few hours experimenting (as you have to restart the game each time you change the setting) before I decided to leave them off and live with the flicker. Some routes will perform well with it turned on, and others the FPS will be reduced to single digits.

Playing on a 4k display helps a lot.

Probably best to have a play with the different options yourself and see if you can find the balance between quality and performance.

I have fxaa + 16x msaa or whatever this thing with a multiplier is called (Enabled it in nvidia settings), but it doesn’t remove flickering completely. Maybe I’m just used to modern games antialiasing and asking for too much. The thing that bugs me is that on every add on promo video the image is immaculate, zero flickering. I wonder how they do it.

The flickering/shimmering trees is the reason why I won't buy the pack.

There a couple of thirds party apps you could try. There's one called reshade. I don't use it myself but my kids do and they inform me it works to an extent. Also there is rw enhancer which I do have. Maybe it helps a little. There's some old threads on the forum discussing both.

There are two kinds of flicker.

I suspect the OP may be asking about the shadows of 3d object that seems to turn on/off a couple of times a second.

I’ve never gotten to the bottom of that problem, it seems to differ between developers, routes from RSSLO being worse than others. I’ve been wondering if it is a performance optimisation thing that can be set somewhere in the route settings. Fewer calculation of shadows meaning better performance.

It seemed to get worse as the core update process began (along with assets loading later than before the core updates).

Are you talking about the Armstrong Powerhouse vegetation pack, or generally about TSC?

I downloaded a Czech route that is very good but it suffers from shimmering trees because of a type they use on CZ routes

What helps the most is SSAA, meaning super-sampling. MSAA helps with certain things - 2D map a chief among them - but many assets are still rendered in a binary way, like most US grilles (sides of the E8), fences, all that.

In some situations 2x2 is great, it really improved catenary and track for me, without any noticeable effect. However, as soon as there was just one train...

Note that 1x1 SSAA is literally doing nothing.

Shimmering depends a lot on how bulky each asset happens to be, and how is the texture.
And, possibly, some smarties. This picture illustrates it well with raw assets. That tree in the background may not show its branches in the distance, but then it gradually appears. In summer it's a big green blob, autumn is brown, but winter and spring are like that.
    20240329085440_1.jpg

And then here is the E8. You can see that it's totally failed to convey the grilles:
    20191117210736 - EMD E8 Amtrak P1, Coach Amtrak-Heritage P1.jpg
Quite possibly that's why a lot of old models simply came with a mushy gray stuff.
And if you click this one to see in full, you can see the epic failure of every single Amfleet coach.

ps.: I suspect that MSAA works best with 2D stuff. The track on this picture happens to be quite nice, but Soldier Summit (3D) is horrible. The grille (3D) is horrible but the logo (2D) is perfect.

Exactly, shadow flickering on tracks and from foliage

your second screenshot depicts my problem very well, and the tree from the first one will flicker too, branches appear and disappear multiple time a second

Yes. This, unfortunately, has nothing to do with what everyone else is talking about. I have found no solution to this.
