    European, preferably.

I've nearly given up by now, I think i just don't get the concept of content for Train Simulator. When confronted with the fact that there is so much payware DLC for TS, people will usually respond by saying two things: First of all "you don't need all the DLC, you pick what you're interested in", and right after that "also, there's lots of freeware content, too!"

Now, every single freeware route on 3rd party sites I've encountered so far and found remotely interesting does need a lot of DLC. Want an Austrian route? Got to own Semmeringbahn and Dreiländereck ("Three Country Corner"). German routes? Don't even try without owning München - Augsburg.

I get why, obviously. People use assets from the other routes, so they can't be provided along with the free route. But it's a steep obstacle for someone new to Train Simulator, especially someone who doesn't plan on spending a lot of time with it.

People who prefer the escapism aspect of simulators need to spend a fortune in TS, compared to, say, flight sims (offering a plethora of free airports, both for P3D and X-Plane) or ETS, which is basically a role model for all other simulators when it comes to handling of content, both first party and third party.

Have I missed anything? Are there any truly free routes for TS you'd recommend?

    Thanks! :)

You could try looking in the Workshop for routes that have minimal asset requirements.

If you have the European and US Asset Packs, then there are plenty of freeware routes that'll work just fine - GTraX's Maine Maritime is an example of such a route: http://railworksamerica.com/index.p...ime-switching-route&catid=20:route-collection
If you're really committed to Europe, though, I'd have a look at Northern Europe: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=435346594 (This link has links to all the freeware downloads you'll need)

A few other options from the US are
    GN Butte Division: http://railworksamerica.com/index.p...hern-butte-division&catid=20:route-collection
    Industrial Interactive: http://railworksamerica.com/index.p...l-interactive-route&catid=20:route-collection
    Big Horn Subdivision: http://railworksamerica.com/index.p...3:cbq-big-horn-v3-2&catid=20:route-collection
Moscow, Camden, & St. Augustine: http://railworksamerica.com/index.p...amden-san-augustine&catid=20:route-collection
    MC&SA in the 1920s: http://railworksamerica.com/index.p...-san-augustine-1920&catid=20:route-collection
    Cimarron & Pacific: http://railworksamerica.com/index.p...31:cimarron-pacific&catid=20:route-collection
There are plenty more out there, though.

You will need the European Loco and Asset pack and the US loco and asset pack - these are sometimes included with a route you may have already bought

    Have a look on https://www.wotawallysbits.co.uk/jetgriff-routes
These routes are not as accurate as they could be because they use Freeware assets
It is the trade off between accuracy and assets
