Fujikyuko Line - Ōtsuki - Kawaguchiko Overview Situated in the picturesque landscapes of Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan's Chubu Region, this 26 kilometre-long line runs through the rolling hills and steep mountains of the region, from Ōtsuki in the northeast to Fujikawaguchiko in the southwest. Much of the route is particularly mountainous; the southern terminus, Kawaguchiko Station, is 857 metres above sea level, situated close to the shore of Lake Kawaguchi, one of the famous Five Lakes that surround Mount Fuji. Perhaps the route's biggest draw is the appearance of Mount Fuji itself; in many parts of the route, the mountain dominates the skyline, and the many views of this iconic mountain bring tourists from across Japan and further afield. The line also provides access to a variety of other interesting destinations in the local area, from the Linear Test Line where Japan's new L0-series Shinkansens are undergoing speed tests, to Fuji-Q Highland, one of Japan's most popular theme parks. Rolling Stock Fujikyu 1000, 1200 & 6000 series EMUs - Stopping services along the line are conducted by three different classes of EMU, the 1000, 1200 and 6000 series. While slower than the Fujisan View Express & Limited Express services, these trains can offer a unique challenge to drivers as they negotiate the varied terrain, whilst simultaneously offering stunning views of the surroundings to both passengers and drivers alike. Fujikyu 8000 & 8500 series EMUs - These two sets (with one example of each having been built) are used on two separate services, the Limited Express (8000 series) and Fujisan View Express (8500 series). Both operate limited-stop services along the line at higher speed than the commuter EMUS listed above. A curious aspect about both trains is that they are actually a modified version of another train; while the 8000 series is a modified Odakyu 20000 series RSE set, the 8500 series is a modified 371 series EMU. The 371 series, which also had only a sole example built, was operated by JR Central between 1991 and 2014, and was modified by Fuji Kyuko for use on the line when it entered service in 2016.
