I can't use TSW at the moment, but just to make the Formation Designer devs aware of these real life situations, which also presents a nice opportunity for some scenarios - Current TSW affected classes 101 & 104 DMUs Until 1980s Need to be able to haul freight waggons and guards vans - unfitted? & vacuum, not sure about bypassed air braked. Need to be able to be hauled behind passenger coaches and freight. Probs until BR MkI coaches, not sure about MkII. Not sure about air braked freight - can DMUs vacuum brakes be disabled ? DMUs in service up to the 1980s used to haul freight on routes where demand couldn't justify a dedicated freight train service. Mostly parcels waggons & box cars, but almost anything that needed to be delivered inc ballast. The DMUs were designed with vacuum brakes, for this task, rather than air brakes as used on newer passenger dedicated traction. https://www.railcar.co.uk/topic/tail-loads/london-midland-region Up to the 1960s, DMUs needing to be moved whilst empty, were sometimes added to the back of steam & diesel hauled passenger & freight services. Similarly, failed DMUs were towed by locos. https://www.railcar.co.uk/images/feature/dmu-drags
Happy to report that this works: Thanks for pointing this out, I love unusual operations like this! I'll have to drive a 101 with a few wagons on the West Somerset now...!
This was a fairly common sight too in the UK................usually early in the mornings delivering the tabloids and broadsheets. (All we need to happen now is for the CL101 to be set up properly in Formation Designer).
