The S-Bahn Berlin is a railway system for local public transport in Berlin and the surrounding area of the city. On a route network of 340 kilometres, 16 lines operate, serving 168 stations, of which around 83 kilometres and 36 stations are in the state of Brandenburg.

The operation and maintenance of the vehicles is the responsibility of S-Bahn Berlin GmbH, which belongs to Deutsche Bahn. The Berlin S-Bahn is the first commuter railway to be designated as an S-Bahn and, along with the Hamburg S-Bahn, the only one in Germany to be operated with direct current from a laterally mounted conductor rail, as is more common with underground trains.

The owner of the S-Bahn network is DB Netz AG, which also manages the lines. The track network of the Berlin S-Bahn is operationally largely separated from the rest of the railway network. This ensures that operations are independent of other train traffic. The trains run on standard gauge tracks (1435 mm). Unlike other Deutsche Bahn services, the Berlin S-Bahn is operated with 750 volts DC from a side conductor rail.

The network of the Berlin S-Bahn can be divided into three different areas. In the east-west direction, the urban railway crosses the city centre. In the west (Westkreuz station) it divides into the lines to Spandau and Potsdam (via Wannsee). In the east (Ostkreuz station) it branches off to Erkner and Strausberg Nord with further branches to Ahrensfelde and Wartenberg.

In the north-south direction runs the North-South Tunnel, built especially for S-Bahn traffic. The north-south line connects in a northerly direction to the northern line (towards Oranienburg) with branches towards Bernau and Hennigsdorf. At the southern end, the Wannsee railway and the Dresden railway (towards Blankenfelde) continue with the branch towards Teltow Stadt. A cross connection between the lines leading north exists between Blankenburg and Hohen Neuendorf parallel to the Berlin outer ring.

The Ringbahn encircles the inner city area. The Görlitzer Bahn branches off from it at Treptower Park station with lines to Königs Wusterhausen, Spindlersfeld and Berlin Brandenburg Airport. It is also connected to the southern Ringbahn via the Baumschulenweg-Neukölln line.

There is an operational connection between the Stadtbahn and the Ringbahn via the Südringkurve (Halensee - Charlottenburg). The connection between the two lines in the Ostkreuz area was closed for several years in 2009 due to construction work. The Ringbahn is connected to the north-south lines at Gesundbrunnen station and via a curve (Schönhauser Allee - Bornholmer Straße). A connection between the east-west and north-south lines exists at Wannsee station.

Most of the S-Bahn network is double-tracked. There are only a few single-track sections, which are mainly found in the outer areas. The platforms in Birkenwerder on the Nordbahn and Karow on the Stettiner Bahn are used jointly by S-Bahn and regional trains. Until 2017, S-Bahn and long-distance trains shared part of the tracks at Strausberg station on the Ostbahn. On the 12.6-kilometre Marienfelde - Blankenfelde section of the Dresdener Bahn, there are no separate facilities for commuter and mainline trains until Mahlow, although only a few goods trains also run there. Only in Birkenwerder is there joint electrical operation with AC catenary and DC conductor rails.

Wuhletal station on the Ostbahn is a special feature of the Berlin S-Bahn network. Here, S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains stop at common directional platforms. It has two parallel directional platforms, the outer tracks of which are used by the S-Bahn. One platform is maintained by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the other by S-Bahn Berlin GmbH. Such combined platforms are rarely built.

The S-Bahn connects all of Berlin's long-distance stations as well as Potsdam's main station. Likewise, almost all regional stations on Berlin territory (exceptions: Albrechtshof and Staaken) and a number of regional stations in Brandenburg are served by the S-Bahn. At 26 S-Bahn stations, it is possible to transfer to Berlin's second rapid transit system, the U-Bahn.

This is absolutely possible for TSW. I really hope they do make Berlin routes. I went there in 2009 on a school trip and one of the things I always remember was both the S Bahn and U Bahn from alexanderplatz. We have all these other German routes which are great of course but we are surely bound to see the capital of Germany get some attention also.

the U Bahn would also be nice to see in TSW3. Time will tell I guess :) .

For DTG their best option is making the TSC S25/26 Heart of Berlin for TSW 3. Just like how NTP and Rapid Transit Tunnels were made for TSW 3 then arrive in TSC

Yes it is a nice quirky route to drive in TSC even if I can't understand all the door announcements. The trains sound good too, real solid electro whine.

The door chime is just the best. No other train can compete. I like the U Bahn door chime also. It sounds more fierce haha.
