Hi guys, I have recently invested in a load of vR (Virtual Railroads) German DLC and am absolutely gobsmacked at the top quality locos and coaches I now have available to use, they are amazing.
Playing TS20XX German routes has never been better, sadly I have one slight issue.
Much as I love German railroading and especially the 70s / 80s era stock, a lot of it comes with inbuilt audio instructions.

    Slight problem:
I is English & got a Grade U in languages back in 1976 and don't have a scooby what they are on about.
I apologise big time for my ignorance and wish to correct it ASAP.

Can anyone suggest some way of playing & translating the .dav audio files included in the downloads to English so I can at least begin to understand what is being said and gain a start in learning the language.
My end goal is to learn and become fluent in German, but that might be some time away.
    Thanks in anticipation
    Best Wishes

What sort of announcements are they and are they really necessary to understand?

Station announcements aren't really necessary for play and safety system alerts should be documented in the manuals.

There are three different types of announcement you may hear
[1] In the Cab of the Unit or Loco - where its to do with Safety Systems
When the AFB (Cruise Control) is enabled the System says AFB-AFB-AFB quickly
There is the equivalent of a DVD called SIFA which as to be acknowledged and will start saying SIFA-SIFA-SIA
If the Emergency brake apples the Zwangsbremsung is played repeatedly until the application is acknowledged
There is also an automated announcement concerning the Train Doors when released

[2] In some scenarios where a Station Announcement is made
There are basically the equivalent of "we are now arriving at Frankfurt station" or whatever - nothing concerning the driver

[3] In some scenarios that are specific to the operation of the train
Some of the scenarios I have downloaded in the past from RailSim.de have an announcement for the driver to tell him something.
I don't understand German and I would not know how to get those translated

Any Audio announcements specific to a Scenario would be found in that scenarios folder in the route folder.
They are playable as a .wav file outside the game

If you give us a clue of something you have heard we might be able to help

    Peter

Thanks for that Peter, really helpful.
I am fine with the AFB, SIFA, Emergency Brake announcements they, are pretty well self explanatory.
The ones I am intrigued to learn are, as you suggested in point 3, possibly Scenario / Loco specific announcements that I believe are explaining what I am to expect in said scenario at the beginning, (speed limits, cautionary advice etc.)
Some of the other announcements (e.g. Rheingold / TEE coaches) have about 3 different ones which by recognising the odd word I guess are more than likely passenger announcements.
They are not critical to game play, but would be nice to have a little understanding to help with the immersion side of the sim.
I just wondered if anybody was aware of a Google Translate type piece of software where you could input audio as opposed to typing text?
Have just got in from work, but hopefully I will find time to extract some examples and post them online for you guys to hear.
    Thanks again

Those are a problem because they were created specifically for a Scenario.
If you found somebody to translate you would then decide if you wished to re-record them for the game.

As I don't speak German I have no idea what the guy is talking about.
If I find them in a scenario I clone it then remove the Audio files - then play it and see if not having them causes a problem
You have the instructions in the pop-up message and in the F1 instructions

I'm not overly fussed about re-recording them, the fact they are in German & I am driving a German train is what it should be.
I will keep them in the scenarios as it really adds to the immersion factor.
I would just love to see a transcript of what is being said so when they play I have a rough idea of what is being asked.
As you say I need to make friends with a German speaking translator.
Just surprised that in this mad world of technology we live in, nobody has come up with an Audio file translator app. LOL
    Thanks again, Craig

There are smartphone app translators - you could try playing the files outside of the game and trying the phone app.

Hey there, I'm just coming over here as a guest from the TSW forums to provide the wanted transcripts. Here you go, Craigie-C :)
Sorry that it took this long, but I didn't have time before.
For understanding my notes: Brackets are annotations by me, italics are German words.

    Hello there.
Well, today, you're driving a tank train to Immendingen to an Eisenbahnverksunternehemen (an unnamed private rail company). Ehm, everything should go according to plan, I got you a good ... ehm a good slot. Please, take care when you leave Singen. You may have to stop briefly in the industrial area there. Other than that, the colleagues there should have taken care of everything. When you have left the Landesgartenschau at Singen, be aware that you will probably encounter an "expect stop." Watch out for the distant signals and main signals over there. Ehm, apart from that, everything should go smoothly. I tried to make sure that you'll arrive at Immendingen at 20:15 - that's rather important as the colleagues there only work until 21:30 and they have to receive the tank cars. But I believe they've already arranged for shunters (as in people doing shunting), which means you can call it day at that point - but you'll have to clear that with your employer. Other than that, you're clear to go. I wish you safe journeys, see you later colleague!

(Person A is the dispatcher and person B is the train driver.)
A: Dispatcher to 91331, please come in.
    B: 91331 receiving.
A: (Unintelligible) is still waiting. You're driving for the tourism association Rhein-Mosel from Trier to Cochem. The train ride is sold out and no boarding at further stations is possible. At least, unless one purchased a ticket beforehand. On your drive, you'll stop at Wittlich where you'll be taking on a big travel group as well as in Bullay where another group gets on board. Your train terminates at Cochem where the passenger switch to a boat. Please drive quickly as you may impede the regional express train following you. Safe journeys!
B: Copy that. We'll set off immediately.
