Hi guys and gals, I'm thinking of replacing my boring old 22'' 16:9 FullHD monitor by something bigger and newer to try and increase immersion. But I'm not sure at all of what I should buy to get an actual nicer experience. Is it even interesting to go beyond 1920x1080? Does a higher resolution allow the game to display more of the environment without having to de-zoom and get the wide-angle lens distortion? Or will I get the same field of view only with finer detail? Do some of you play in QHD resolution (2560x1440) on a 16:9 monitor? Or 3440x1440 on a wide/curved monitor? Or simply share your cool experiences running TSW on a big/premium monitor, at very high resolution, or with multiple monitors; all insights appreciated!
I have an ultra wide monitor and that is for TSW absolute awesome. Its so cool to have the wider angle! I have the Alienware aw3423dwf. Its an OLED but this monitor is so extremely nice. This is 1440p but looks the same as 4K.
I use a Sceptre O34 34" Ultrawide at 3440x1440 - looks awesome, and I love the field of view. Here's a gallery of a couple of in-game screenshots: https://postimg.cc/ZWJCSXqJ Currently around $210 in the US, unfortunately a lot more in the UK but I'm sure there are other options.
on 3440*1440 there is a little distortion on the sides objects looks a little fatter (npc) probably on all * x 1440 resolutions it is not that annoying that it stops me from playing that is just a side effect of wide screen
I actually play on former office display with 1920x1200 resolution and I found that it's pretty sweet for sims. You don't really need to see to the sides as you are looking forward anyway, but you can see much more of the control panel beneath the windshield.
I use 4K on a regular monitor, I like the extra detail. Easier to spot signals from a distance and in-cab text can be read easily without the need to zoom.
I have a budget one ultrawide 2560x1080 200Hz. I don't want to go back to the standard 16:9 aspect ratio at all.
I use this monitor. LC-Power LC-M40-UWQHD-144 And I only play with a resolution of 3440x1440! The monitor is a 40-inch with 144Hz. I could also set the resolution to 3840x2160. But I've never tried that yet.
I run 3840x2160, but you do need a modern GPU. My old 2070 struggled to get up to 30fps on most routes, and far less on the more 'taxing' ones. My new 5070 delivers 60 fps at a canter, though
About a year ago I bought a 34" curved widescreen. I have a 4k monitor that's capped at 60 fps, but I like the widescreen more so I'm happy to play at 1440p with unlimited fps.
It's been nearly ten years now of owning one of the first 34' curved 3440x1440 monitors and although compared to newer ones it was stupid expensive at the time and "only" 100Hz, I can't see an upgrade path over this one existing honestly. ...well okay, a 49 inch 5120x1440 monitor would be one, if you want even wider, or a 40 inch 5120x2160 if you need more resolution, but both are still very very expensive. 4K ....is nicer than 1080p, but the same old 16:9 format...and still harder to drive than a 3440x1440p monitor. Booooooring! The added visibility to the sides ingame, especially in something like a train sim (and the amazing way they look on your desk IRL!), in my opinion, still make this the sweet spot for gaming right now, and with how cheap 3440x1440 monitors are now, for what they offer they are a no brainer. The only problem is they'll ruin every other PC for you =p
I play in 4k using a 58” HDR TV mounted on the wall behind my computer desk. It’s big enough that when I’m zoned in I don’t really see anything else…very immersive. 4k at that size is incredibly clear. Just be sure whatever resolution you move too, your GPU has the horsepower to handle it. I do chuckle sometimes about all the times I was told as a kid not to sit too close to the TV, now I literally have one mounted 4’ away from my eyes lol.
I use a 4K @ 240Hz monitor but I used 1440p before and the difference isn't enormous. The difference between 1080p and 1440p is though. Never tried ultrawide
Damn, 34-inch ultrawide seems so crazy huge to me! I started PC gaming on a 14-inch CRT and I barely have the mental space to conceive of such a beast! (Let alone the physical space on my desk to set it up.) It sounds like 1440p is a must though. I think I'll get a 27-inch and see how I like it. In seriousness this got me thinking how the distance between eyes and monitor is an important factor here. Looking at that 58-inch screen must start feeling a lot like looking out a locomotive's windshield. On the other hand I imagine it feels less natural to use the mouse or move the camera around in 1st person view on a setup like this. Do you like to adjust the view to show both the windshield and the controls? or only the windshield? Do you use the 'zoomier zoom' mod (included in god mode mod I believe) and do you prefer to be zoomed in or zoomed out?
I play in 2560x1440 on a 32" monitor. I still need to zoom in on cockpit's displays & clocks to be able to see clearly what's written there (if I want to play without HUD). Measuring with a tape, I seat ~90cm from the monitor.
Generally a bit of both but mostly windshield…it depends on the locomotive. I haven’t seen that mod before. I generally leave the zoom at the default for the locomotive.
When I bought a 30-inch ultrawide monitor after a 24-inch 16:9, I thought I'd get cross-eyed. But no, a couple of days later, and now 16:9 monitors seem too narrow. The diagonal is just a matter of habit. It takes a couple of days to get used to it
I currently have a 3060 running a shitty 1080p60 monitor. Doesn't look great. Then I overclocked the refresh rate to 80hz. Not only is it way smoother than 60hz but somehow the colors look deeper and blacker. I can't run consistent 80fps in TSW with my 3060 but I definitely cannot go back. That being said, I'm looking to upgrade to a 5070 Ti SUPER (when it releases in about 6 months) and either a 1440p or 4K monitor, 120hz minimum. I'm horribly split between the two... I know 4K will look amazing but isn't guaranteed to have spectacular (well, more than 90fps) performance, and 1440p looks less good but is guaranteed to give me better framerates. What would you all say is the best choice for me?
