Interesting question. When I have multiple units front and rear I always wonder when selecting the "coupled at long hood " etc whether that should put all forward facing loco number lights, ditch lights on etc as I select on the lead loco.
Similarly should it not send a tail lights command to rear.
The rotary switches seem to do nothing

Once you set the mu headlight control, use the rear headlight switch in the lead cab.

It works as intended. You need to set it up in each cab of a MU latch-up. It only works for MUs, not DPUs. If done correctly, the front headlight switch in the lead loco will control the front headlight of the lead loco and the rear headlight switch in the lead loco will control the rear headlight of the rear loco in the MU consist.

Don’t forget after setting the light control in the lead loco to set the same switch in the rear loco to controlled from another unit…. Or something like that anyway.

Note however that in any consist except loco-only, all locos except the lead will be intermediate units and show no lights at all. The exception is a loco which is the last element in the consist, which should have its rear-facing light on 'dim' - but that has to be set from the rear MU, you can't control it from the front.
