The Preservation Crew are currently working on the activation of the destination displays on the Class 166 DMU that comes with Great Western Express. We have struggled to accurately populate the Route ID number that appears next to the destination on the front of the train. We have found that it is very challenging to get this information from cameras and sourcing the information isn't as straightforward as we might have liked. (We have looked through Working Timetables from 2017, Real Time Trains, Traksy, Open Train Times, GWR Timetables, National Rail Enquiry, Live Departures, Youtube, Flickr, TfL, Sectional Diagrams, 5mile diagrams, and Signalling documents.) We are now looking for assistance from the community, and we would like to try and create a list of all the destinations and their Route ID number. This would be greatly appreciated and will contribute towards making this feature as authentic as possible.
Do you want all regions? I work at Bristol Parkway station so I could get you Central region destinations but they'd not involve represented routes at all
51 is used for Portsmouth-Cardiff services 03 is used by virtually every North Downs line service (Reading-Redhill/ Gatwick Airport/ Shalford) 50 is used by Severn Beach-Bristol TM services (may also be used for Severn Beach-Weston Super Mare)
Thanks for the question. I'll take up any offer of data even if we're not sure it's needed for this particular request. It may prove useful in the future. Cheers
Afternoon.. I sign these units as a Reading based train driver. The destination displays don't have route specific codes anymore, the numbers are just the first 2 digits of the TrainFX route code used for the service required. For example the above; 0106 is the code for Slough to Windsor, so 01 is displayed on the outside. 0148 is the code for Twyford to Henley, so again 01 is displayed on the outside.
I take it you're not able to get access to a cab not in present service use to do this research? That would really be the best way to do it, but I'd imagine there's probably a real train driver (like LTV above) who might be a good source of this and might be able to get you a list depending on the locations being used for the product in question.
50 is used for any Severn Beach Line services (So Weston/Bristol to Avonmouth/Severn Beach) 51 is used for Cardiff - Portsmouth runs I only know all that but I am gonna be Turbo hunting at stations so I could potentially see and note some numbers if I can
I have another idea. Try making a Freedom of Information request under Network Rail? Only gives the first two numbers. We don't know if Cardiff-Portsmouth, for instance, would be 5105, 5146, 5192, or something else.
I was able to find this on YouTube: Judging by it being at Cholsey, I would imagine 12 = Oxford - Paddington. At least, it's Oxford to somewhere.
Thank you for the feedback on this topic over the weekend, all information provided is greatly appreciated. Through this exchange it has been confirmed that the numbers which appear are not 'route codes' in the traditional sense but in fact the first two digits of the system which powers the on-board announcements. The operator inputs a code to set what destination sequence will play during the journey. However this means for example Slough to Windsor, Maidenhead to Marlow and Twyford to Henley (and their return moves) all start with (and thus display) '01' despite being different routes. The reason these codes even display on the front is left over from integration of several systems during upgrades over the years. The codes we're going to use on the Class 166 in GWE are: 01 - Windsor, Marlow, Henley, Greenford 02 - Basingstoke 03 - Gatwick, Redhill 04 - Bedwyn, Newbury 05 - Didcot, Reading 12 - Oxford, Banbury 14 - Hereford, Malvern, Worcester Thanks again to everyone who helped out with this query.
Small question and it probably can’t be answered or confirmed yet, but can we change the PIS manually or will it be automatic?
That looks very promising, and I'd also like to thank you for reaching out to the community on this to hopefully make the PIS implementation on the 166 as realistic as possible. I do have a (technical) question though, and would greatly appreciate an answer. The latest PIS system takes the stations from the Station Directory of the route rather than from a set list but with the codes being set depending on destination it seems like that might not be the case here. So my question would be whether the 166 also takes the destinations from the Station Directory and if so, how would that work with the codes?
I believe it'll be the same set-up as the way the 377 works - so semi-automatic. The destination is already set however you have the ability to change it via an up and down arrow and confirm selection. I'm not 100% sure though so this may be incorrect.
Not bothered about the destination displays but I am perplexed why the unit takes such a ridiculously fast time to accelerate which isn’t anything like true life AND the gear change speed is 57/58 mph NOT 64mph . If this isn’t changed in the update I shall continue to not use the unit.
I'm more bothered at not having RD support and the preservation updates. I stopped playing the game because of these things more than anything else but you're right the acceleration does need to be looked at.
No, alas still not supported or the HST either. There are others still outstanding as well. And this after DT saying how simple it is to do.
Hiya, I can confirm that Rail Driver mapping has been completed for all trains in the Preserved Collection. Any vehicle not yet compatible is in the queue awaiting the release of its update.
I Can't wait to be able to select destinations on the 166 , It won't be to long until gwe gets updated , like I'm really excited for it to be updated
What ever it is , just leave me alone , I signing out of Dovetail games i hear back from Natalie in the future
I wonder if it has been delayed yet further with the latest update fixing things in their previous update?
With regards to the physics, will they be updated to have an AI-controlled train set off in something higher than Notch 1? Unless this is actually by design and I just set off in Notch 4/5 in the vain hope that it'll get going faster
I hope the 166 doesn't disappoint but this waiting is unneeded. I notice that Carhcart is on sale but I'm not spending another penny until the GWE update comes out, I can wait but it shouldn't be like this considering how long we have waited for this.

Seriously, can you please use one post to reply to multiple comments? There is a "Quote" function there. Hit it on posts you want to quote, paste the quotes into your message, type a reply below each, done. Fair enough. I for some reason thought that didn't go all the way to Paddington, but it clearly does and thus he probably meant that one. I basically appeared here to join the 166 display discussion.
