I know there's a tendency for people, including me, to rush to the forums to complain about things ("Rest assured that I was on the Internet within minutes, registering my disgust throughout the world. Worst DLC ever.") So I thought I'd just drop a quick post to say, "Man, this game rocks."

The Underground has been a long time coming to TSW, and now it's here, it's even better than I hoped for. We've heard about the not-so-great, so here's what's great:

    • Visually, the game is stunning. I know it's a train simulator, and graphics don't matter, but all the same, it's so beautiful! The stations in particular are lovingly detailed, and very realistic.
    • The 1972 stock is gorgeous. Model, textures, controls, sounds, everything is a delight. No wonder it's the star of all the screenshots. I love it.
    • The train is easy to drive, but hard to drive well, so it's really fun trying to master it. As always in TSW the accurate physics gives you a real sense of speed and momentum, and you can almost feel the weight of the train dragging you back as you chug up a steep grade. If you put the power down too fast on wet rails, you'll wheelspin like a kid with his first Escort RS Cosworth.
    • Fun gameplay. The tight timetables pose a real challenge. Just like the real Tube, the only way to stay on time is to power out of the platform with both throttles in afterburner, drive it like you stole it between stops, approach the platform at attack speed, and apply full military braking at the last possible second, screaming to a stop just inches from the signal. There are a dozen tiny things that can lose you seconds—fumbling the controls, locking the wrong doors, not getting the brakes off in good time—and no way to gain them back, because the AI already set the hot-lap time for each stop. But you can just beat the schedule if you drive perfectly. That will take a little practice. (Okay, a lot of practice.)
The new controller scheme is much more intuitive—I didn't have to look anything up, which is more than I can say for the previous version. In general, the game is smoother, faster, prettier, easier to use, and better. Just better.

Can I come up with a long list of irritating little bugs, deficiencies, and user experience annoyances that could and should have been ironed out before release? Sure. See all other forum posts for details. Is that stopping me from having an absolute blast? No, sir. It is not.

Thank you for taking the time to also write about what you like! It's a pleasure to see someone enjoying the game. (I shall also take a look at your other posts and see what else you've experienced)

I agree with all of what you say. There are the bugs and niggles that everybody points out, and they do need pointing out, but in the main the Bakerloo line is an absolute triumph. I’ve taken a couple of days off playing because I’ve had other things to do but up until that on every day since release I’ve been having a great time driving all three routes. It’s all very new, so the bug count will still be high, but even with that the quality of the content shines through. The underground section of the Bakerloo line is just stunning and there aren’t many things around that can match the pleasure of driving the 1972 stock in it. Apart from being able to see the outside of the train, it’s always a little disappointing when you exit the underground section and see daylight. I just want to turn around straight away and get back in that tunnel. It’s sublime.

    *it’s not sublime, it’s sub-clay, that’s geology for you!
