I just bought this game yesterday on ps5. I’ve done all the tutorials, when I click on journey, ALL I ever do is move stuff around the rail yard (sand patch). Will I ever get to a point where I can hook up a lot of cars together, need to load with coal, and take to a destination? Or am I wasting my time in this journey thing?

Each trip in journey mode has a code and the codes mean specific things.
I think Y means yard work or shunting.
Also, are you just continuing the journey automatically?
You can turn that off so you can actually choose which journey you want to do.

Ok, select a route and then scroll down and across until you get to the options menu.
Scroll down the various options and near the bottom is an option to auto continue journey. As default this is on but you can turn it off and then press the select button on the controller to save the options.

When that is done, you'll be able to manually select any part of the journey from the journey menu.

Right on. But if I continue to just follow the auto journey will it eventually get me to “long hauling”?

Yes, it should do but I'm not sure how far down the list they are or how many there are.

In the second chapter with the scenario "Fully Fueled" you'll switch over to mainline operations.
Or you can go to Explore > Timetable > (choose an SD40 or AC4400) > pick any service that doesn't start with Y (the map will show where it runs).

Persevere, it is all good practice for when you get out on the line.
